Colts Gameday Thread
Well, I was hoping for one last "do or die" game this season, but as of this writing, it looks like the Chiefs are going to reach the 10-win mark today.
Regardless, we have an opportunity here, and that is to end the season on a high note, with two consecutive wins and our first winning record in, well, way too long.
Eight wins was my bare minimum expectation at the start of the year. It will certainly be a relief to reach that mark, but a winning record would really set the tone for 2011. GO RAIDERS!
P.S. Sorry I've been a bit absent, it's just been one of those weeks.

Fire Hue Jackson. NOW.

Some of you armchair QBs are hilarious. Yes let's fire the OC who only transformed a terrible offense into a passable one. GTFO
Anno 4:37..
I think ArkansanRaider is making a joke...He was unhappy when he left this board last year just as I was so now puts some crap out there to chew on...
However I do believe the issues at "QB" are real ones...Some here want to stick it out with this guy but I'm for bringing in some new better blood and if "JC" can win the job than fine...If NOT he plays back-up where I believe he's best suited...
Way too many throws off target...Behind or late...Too long or too high...If he makes a good one it's followed up with crap on the next 2-or-3....Wide open targets and he misses them...
It wasn't the play calling if the "QB" makes the throw on time on target...But the pass-pass-pass when we don't have an adequate "QB" is questionable when we sacrifice the run in the process...
Indy crowded the box and said we would have to beat them threw the air..."JC" could NOT and they knew that...
The "Zebra"s did their part in this game as usual...Took away positive plays and killed momentum while adding positives to Indy's failures late 3rd to early 4th quarter....
But starting at the 20yd line with 5:02 on the clock and taking over 3mins of the clock to make the "TD" was inexcusable on the part of "JC"...He threw short in the middle of the field and picked his way ever so slowly...There's NO hustle in the huddle and at the 16 week point of the season he should have already learned that portion of our "O" well enough to execute the 2 min drill...NOT the 3+ min drill....
And don't try to tell me about his stats...I have already seen that along with his inadequate play...He may be all we got's and the best we have had in some time but your bar is way too low if that adequate to you...
PantyRaider..."QB" Is At The Top Of My List!!!!/_
So Jackson seems to think we have the best offense in the NFL or something?
Why else would he play a vanilla offense against top-notch teams like Pitts, and Indy, and be creative against chumps like Denver?
I think I counted a whopping ONE pass play attempt over 15 yards... ONE!
And this is the guy people think might be HC???
Why?
I thought Al liked the deep pass?
And is it against the rules to FAKE an all out blitz or something?
Fire BOTH coordinators and keep Cable, IMO.
Oh, and the value of Seymour couldn't be more apparent than when he is sitting out... the d-line looked in shambles today against a very suspect Indy o-line.
Our final drive was perfect play calling if the team had 10 minutes left... the refs were calling hand checks tightly... why not a deep ball to see if we also can get a PI???
ONE PASS ATTEMPT OVER 15 FUCKING YARDS!
Lamonica had to have his head in the toilet.
Is it the play calling, or is Campbell just to scared to throw anything besides dump passes?
Either way... this is not the answer.
Bundle Campbell with our 2nd and third and lets draft Luck at number one.
This stat posted by PR says it all;
Rushing Yards 191 (Indy) 80 (Oak)
We got shredded up the middle on runs.
McFadden gets 11 carries?
During most of the game we were either (a) ahead (b) down by a few points ...
why would we go away from our strength (running the ball) and away from Indy's weakness (stopping the run)?
Puzzling to say the least.
Gary...
I agree it's difficult to know how much to blame on Hue and how much to blame on "JC"....
I'm taking my personal shot at it here but I'm betting it's more "JC"s reluctance to pull the trigger and NOT Hue's ineptness at calling a long ball or a sideline with little time on the clock....
Did anyone else see how many times "JC" was off target -n- too late...
Hell the entire bar where I was at could see it...It was filled with Raider fans -n- a few "49-Tears" too but everyone could see it...How could ya miss when it's so obvious!!!...
PantyRaider...."FA" or Draft I Don't Care As Long As We Adequately Address This Obvious Deficiency!!!/_
"CJ"...
I have absolutely NO answer!!!...
Who'd a thunk?
Normally I don't complain too much about the officiating or blame the zebras for a loss but ...
There were 2 very questionable P.I.s called against the Raiders that were the difference and led to 2 Indy TDs.
The 1st one was at the end of the 1st half on 3-15 from Oak 43 yard line called on CJ covering Garcon. Instead of punting, Indy on the next play capitalized and scored a TD with only about :40 on the clock. Instead of going into half up 13-10, we trail 13-17.
The 2nd one was definitely a bogus call on Routt covering White that put Indy at our 12. I watched the play live, and saw 2 subsequent replays. There was some VERY minor, incidental hand fighting but no interference. At the time of this penalty, the Raiders D had put the screws & clamps on Indy's offense. We were down 16-17 and this gift wrapped PI led to another TD putting us in the hole for 16-24.
It became apparent 2nd half all Manning was doing was identifying where Routt and Branch were and attacking them... both have the uncanny knack of allowing their assignment to break and then try to push them out of bounds after the catch.
I agree the PI calls were bogus... but perhaps the deep refs were calling all handchecks... and only one team bothered to throw the ball deep?
I wish we could get the Jackson up to answer questions after the game so he can explain some of this... the only time I haven't been left scratching my head on play calling is when the running game is off the rails... now that I think about it.
Gary -
Regarding the lack of deep balls thrown by Campbell ... I'm not saying the Raiders couldn't attempt to stretch the field on a few occasions but consider:
(1) The Colts were rushing arguably the best tandem defensive end rushers in the league ... clearly Campbell needed to get the ball out quickly. Do you honestly think that Campbell could drop back 5,7 steps and have enough time to go deep today?
(2) The Colts D employs a Cover 2 Zone where both safeties play deep. The Cover 2 Zone is a "bend but don't break" defense. It gives the short underneath stuff but makes it very risky to try to complete deep balls.
(3) More times than not, when the Raiders go deep, it is off the play action pass. The Raiders never got in a rhythm of running the ball and establishing the run. Without the run game established, our play action pass, vertical routes are not as much of a factor.
The combination of Jackson's play calls, Campbell's conservative nature of managing the game, our suspect pass blocking vs. Freeney and Mathis, and the Colts deep cover 2 zone led to the perfect storm of no deep ball attempts.
Personally, I don't think the lack of deep balls attempted had any noticeable bearing on the outcome.
The lack of deep ball attempts is not the root of the loss. The root of the loss IMO is threefold:
(1) Our inability to run the ball
(2) Colt's ability to run the ball
(3) Bad penalties; bad in terms of bogus calls (PI's) and bad as in timing (a few big runs by Raiders called back).
PR -
We had more net yards passing than the Colts, the MOST prolific passing teams in the NFL. Putting the blame on Campbell seems rather lame.
Campbell completed more balls than Manning, at a higher %, for more total yards, had a higher QB Rating, and less INTS (0 INTS to 2 INTS).
"CJ"...
Add to that a bogas holding call against the Raiders that took away a long run and put us in the hole when we were moving the ball into position to score...We subsequently punted and than came the help you mentioned calling the "PI" and subsequent "TD"....
Clearly the "Zebra"s had a stake in this game...Some fans in the bar were questioning whether the "Zebra"s had bets on the game...My view is the NFL has an agenda and these bastards just carry it out...
Something else strange to me...Why didn't Payton want to score the "TD" and get the extra tie breaker points...He slid without any need to...Folks said they were favored by 3pts and won by 5pts...Someone else said it was 4.5pts...I don't know and I don't know how all that comes into play because I don't gamble but I think it was strange non the less...
That score would have made it a 38-24 game....

Breaking News
Singletary ousted in San Francisco
"CJ"...
Yes those are nice stats but don't tell the real story here...
We could NOT sustain drives...Why...Because "JC" could NOT make consistent plays with his arm and had a mental laps when running...
We needed to get the 1st dn and he had room to run...He was across the line but stutter steps like he was going to throw and than started running again...This gave time for the defender to close and "JC" went down well short of the needed 1st dn trying to slide....Had he just kept going once he committed he would have made that critical 1st dn...
He repeatedly threw behind receivers...Once the ball bounced off the hands and was almost picked off...He would make a good play followed by 1 or 2 piss poor throws...This was in critical situations when we needed to sustain the drive...He thew into the feet of wide open receivers a few times in the 2nd half...If he had gotten it close they would have been probable completions and moved the chains...
Here is the point...I expect a seasoned vet to be able to make the necessary throws to be consistently close...He can not...Be on time -n- on target...He can not...Be decisive...He is not...
Look at the 1st half...87yds passing...on 12 completions...7 yd ave...
J. Campbell 12/18 87yds 4.8yd ave 66.6%
For the game...
J. Campbell 29/42 231yds TD
Now subtract the two...
2nd half #'s...
J. Campbell 17/24 144yds TD 6yd ave 71%
So you say the #'s look good but they don't tell the true story...They don't tell how piss poor those missed critical throws were...
Maybe my bar is set too high at "QB" but "JC" does not deliver in crunch time when we really need it...
PantyRaider...Sometimes The Stats Could The Vision!!!/_
Stats say we ran -w- a 4yd ave and passed with a 4.7yd ave...OK so every 3 plays was a 1st dn with 12+ yds gained....Wrong because we could NOT sustain drives...Those mistakes were at critical times in the drives...
For me, the D wasn't nearly aggressive enough. Too much read and react. Lots of backpeddaling off the LOS by our DBs. More zone than I can remember from the Raiders. What happened to disrupting their timing?
IMO, it still seems like McClain commits too early to a gap. Instead of playing the ball, he runs right into a blocker. That allowed at least one big run. That said, I believe he'll learn and be a solid MLB for many years.
Campbell wasn't the reason we lost this game, but he had some very bad throws behind receivers.
Despite this game (and Jax), I'm still inclined to keep this team (and coaching) in tact and add a few quality players.
Now is not the time for knee jerk reactions.
Funny how some here who defended the Raiders decisions regarding players, coaches and management are now the ones demanding change.
Raiders can still finish 8-8, which is about all many of us expected.
It "only" took eight years for the Raiders to show any sign of life. Now we should build off that, not break it up and start over again.

Re: "Some" wanting change...
Go back and look and you will see that when Marshal was brought in 2 seasons ago most here agreed it was a temporary "Stop-Gap" move until we have an opportunity for someone better...It was a late season hire and the pickens was slim at best...He was a proven "DC" but not one who could consistently build a dominate "D"...His 2 season contract is now up...
The very same holds true in OakTown today...They show flashes but never complete the recipe or dominate consistently...Just like what he had in Seattle...
Thus as should be expected a change is in order...Maybe now that Singaltery has been run out of "GayBay" we should go after him as "DC"...Can you imagine the fist fight on the sidelines between him -n- Cable...That would put the Budy-Gilbride Bout to shame...
As for the other projected change you were also on board with that just a short while ago while posting your long line of tears relating to our "WR"s...Sanjay Lal has NOT demonstrated anything critiquing our "WR"s the past 4 seasons....That's about when Freddy B retired and we have NOT been productive sense...Now are you saying it's your desire to continue letting him pull the "WR" strings...A guy who never played at the pro level...Hum!...Curious to say the least!!!...
As for this:
Campbell wasn't the reason we lost this game, but he had some very bad throws behind receivers.
Perhaps...But he is the reason we couldn't win it...Or were you impressed with his 3+ Min No-Hurry "O"....

The knock on him this season has been his removal of the "M-M" coverage inside the Red-Zone to a screwed-up Zone that consistently gets beat...See "AZ" and other games...
Has he helped our team progress...
Without a doubt...
Will he be able to complete the pie and make us a long term dominate "D" for seasons to come...
Isn't that a little foolish to hope for at this point in his long 40yr career...
Has he ever been that successful long term before....
He has shown periods of good success followed by periods of failure which is why he has moved around after getting replaced by such as Jim Mora/Jack Del Rio/Casey Bradley -n-_________(Raiders New "DC")....
When that will be is the only question yet unanswered...
PantyRaider...Time To Complete The History!!!/_
"Go back and look and you will see that when Marshal was brought in 2 seasons ago most here agreed it was a temporary "Stop-Gap" move until we have an opportunity for someone better"
Does Al Davis know that?
These are the cards that are being played. Marshall was handpicked.
Unless Davis wants to open up his pocketbook and hire top shelf coaches, Marshall is as good as it gets for the Raiders. Singletary is not in Davis' price range.
Besides, bringing in another DC to run the same defense is likely to bring the same results, or worse. At least Marshall has had time to tune the system to his players (or vice versa).
Without pointing fingers at anyone specific, why is it so difficult to understand that anybody that coaches the Raiders needs to be Al Davis-friendly. Right now we have a staff of Al Davis-friendly coaches. Trust me, this is as good as it gets.
Until we establish a new management philosophy, we should want to keep these coaches and press on. Otherwise, finding the perfect storm of management and coaches is like finding a needle in a haystack.
Your Raider Depression is very apparent....Forgive me for string it up...Go take another Prozac and have a nap and everything will look better in the morning...Well so they say....Miracles do happen though!!!...
But now for any who don't believe in the "Doom-n-Gloom" that surrounds this team here is a thought...
The Raiders should make a move at Mike Sigletary as "DC"...They could even do it now bringing him in as assistant and let him have a week with the team in prep for the new season....After 42 seasons Marshal may be ready to retire...
His "D" was pretty good in "SF"...I think we prolley have better players than they do...Maybe he can bring out their best and call a damn good game when we really need it....

PantyRaider...I Think It's Worth Consideration!!!/_
Don't make it personal. (That's what got us in trouble before, remember?) I'm merely stating my side of it.
Truth be told, I have pretty much suggested the Raiders do the opposite of what they've done for many years. By extension, if they had listened to me, perhaps they would have had better results.
Now I suggest the status quo, while you want change. How funny is that?
Fact is, the Raiders have managed to elevate themselves (as a team, a coaching staff and, yes, management) above several teams in the NFL. IMO, now is not the time for more change. It's time to fine tune what's been started.
Smart investors buy stock on its way up, not when it's declining.
For seven years I wouldn't buy the Raiders with your money. Now I'm a bonafide investor. Bring everybody back and try to improve more. If it can't be done, so be it. Start with anew.
That's how the NFL works.
Not to be personal but the way the NFL works is going after other teams aggressively in their coaching/management staffs as well as their players...
Addition by Subtraction is a regularly acceptable practice and we need to do something to stop this bleeding in run support...
Marshal has NOT been the answer after 2 seasons at the "DC" helm...It's nice that he brings his toughness which would most certainly be continued with someone like Singletary at the helm...But we need immediate results in run support and can't afford to have that an issue again next season...
Thus the recommendation for change at the lower level of "DC"...That's NOT a complete overhaul of the coaching and management of the team...Just an area that needs improvement like "WR" production...
Look at the total picture...We added the bodies but the basic result has stayed the same...If we go adding more bodies will that result in some miraculous turnaround...I doubt it sense we can still only have 11 bodies on that field at any one time...
Add a few bodies yes...Change the "DC" and move ahead...
PantyRaider...That's A very Simple Procedure!!!/_
"NYR"...
Here's a very fine example of what I suggest and the Raiders did it this season while maintaining stability in the front office as well as the coaching ranks....
2 ares of need for improvement were addressed as follows...
Piss Poor "DL" play was reinforced with the addition of Mike Waufle and a few "DL" player via "FA" -n- Draft picks...We moved on and played much better as a result...
Piss Poor play of our entire "O" needed attention so Hue was hired as "OC" and a few players were added via "FA" -n- Draft Picks and we moved on with outstanding improvement in that unit...
Now I merely suggest we continue that improvement process threw the addition of a new qualified "DC" and "WR" coach along with the addition of a few bodies via "FA" and the Draft....
Simple isn't it????....
Simple truth be known it's just as difficult to acquire qualified quality assistant coaches as qualified quality players...Ya go after them as they become available and work with what you have until they do become available...Thus a 2 season contract was extended to Marshal as "DC" with a view to an upgrade when the right man was available...
PantyRaider...YES!!....Mr Davis Does Know That!!!/_
Hell...Addition by Subtraction is so real now many of us fear the loss of Hue to some other team...
"SF" could certainly be players now couldn't they...
Denver is poised to go after someone too...
"SD" could also join the market shortly...
Tenn might join in...
Seattle is obviously NOT happy with their results...
"AZ"/"StL" also have had a taste of Hue this season so there is NO cloaking the matter...
Who else is in the cards to fill these possible positions and others that may yet become available...

Raiders players unanimous in support of bringing back coach Cable
“It would be a huge setback,” punter Shane Lechler said. “We’ve invested so much of our time and there’s been so much commitment starting from the day he took over. Not only this year. He had a plan. The plan is working. It would be a terrible disappointment if there was a change because he’s the guy for this job. This job is for a blue-collar, hard-nosed coach. That’s what we need.”
WoW!....Nothing like patting "BR"/"H"/Gary -n- myself on the back...ThankYou players...
So now it's undeniably a matter of TRUTH....Cable had a plan...
On it went, from one end of the locker room to the other, with player after player singing Cable’s praises and lobbying for his return. The support came from offensive, defensive and special teams players.
“We love him, man, and he’s a great guy to play for,” Groves said. “He’s a player’s coach, and I never knew what that was until I came here. He is really a player’s coach. He doesn’t beat your body down, he takes care of your body during the season. He is actually a player’s coach and I would hate to see him go.”
Now Damn!!!...That's what I like to hear from our players...

Cause of death?
Inability to shed many of the same problems that have plagued the Raiders since 2003 in games played outside their own division.
"Zebra Hits"....
While it's true the Raiders appeared to have gotten the bad end of a few pass interference calls, there wasn't anyone in the locker room saying the better team lost Sunday.
Those Raiders teams were notoriously poor against the run, so with that in mind, it shouldn't have been a great shock to see the pass-first Colts run 39 times for 191 yards, their biggest rushing game since 2007.
With Oakland employing a "big nickel" defense, taking out a weakside linebacker in favor of Mitchell, the Colts attacked relentlessly on the ground.
See...Now this is where the "DC" played a direct role in this defeat...Why if he was going to use that "Big Nickle" didn't he also use the other end and employ that "5-Man Front" too so we didn't blitz but got good pressure with 5 down "DL"....
Oh! ya!...A key element was out of the game...Seymour....Which really sucks!!!...

I obviously dont want to get caught using it (as I'd probably loose a good friend and the wife wont be too pleased either!), if anyone has used one and got caught, how did you talk your way out of it and is it worth the risk to see someone you really fancy changing/naked?
