Jaguars Gameday Thread

Well, every week I keep saying it: we're in do-or-die territory today.

The fact that I keep saying it is a testament to the grit of this team and its ability to somehow stay in contention despite its Jekyll-and-Hyde personality.

The Jags are due for a letdown, and it's the Raiders duty to deliver it today. GO RAIDERS!

How can Zach Miller - despite his injuries and resulting lack of production - still be the Raiders leading receiver with only 30 catches? Ski and Camp have combined for 2,500 yards, so QB is not the sole issue. Hmm.

Meanwhile, Jags and Raiders. Here’s a spooky stat comparison:

Total Yards Per Game
Raiders = 338.5
Jags = 338.4

Passing Yards Per Game
Raiders = 189.5
Jags = 186.9

Rush Yards Per Game
Raiders = 149.0
Jags = 151.5

You’d think it was the same team... Could be a dogfight (no pun to Mike Vick intended).

I didn’t realize this but the Raiders lead the league in sacks (36). That’s cool, but don’t expect that number to change much today.

Garrard is mobile and the Raiders will try and contain him. He is the Jags second leading rusher, and has four rushing TDs.

Raiders have not done well this year when they play read and react style of D. IMO, they need to stay the aggressors despite Garrard’s ability to run. Play tight press coverage and apply the pressure. This is the formula that has worked, almost regardless of the opponent.

It’s Gameday!

GO RAIDERS!

LB McClain is inactive for today. Ricky Brown needs to step up, BIG time.

My hope is that TE Miller is finally near 100% health and is a vital 3rd down conversion weapon for Campbell.

As NYR pointed out with some alarmingly twin-like stats, these teams are VERY similar and evenly matched.

As usual, this game will be decided by who wins the battle in the trenches, the turnover battle, and who collectively exerts their will over the opponent.

Prediction:

Raiders 17 - Jaguars 13

2 nice receptions from DHB.

Campbell is making plays when the pocket breaks down and without a big rushing attack.

Good overall 1st half by the team.

Would love to see the Raiders take a few deep shots to Ford and put the pedal to the metal in the 2nd half.

My dream scenario:

We build on our lead in the 3rd Q. and then pound the ball to close it out.

Like I sad before, if you look at Campbell's career stats and followed his career a bit, there's no questioning that he is a legit NFL starter. Of course, I don't think he's "the answer," but until we have a better choice, let's stop this nonsense of wanting guys who are third-string level QB's supplanting a moderately successful veteran QB. Cable should be fired for playing QB musical chairs IMO. My hope is that Hue Jackson gets a promotion in the off-season.

No doubt we need to keep Hue happy but the only way he moves up is if Cable moves to the front office...This turn-around was engineered by Cable...NOT by Hue...Hue works with the "O" only...It's also been the "D" that kept this team in contention...

Re: The Game....

Panty. You're telling me you don't understand the value of "Time of possession?" And what the heck does Cable have to do with defense anyway? Good grief. Cable's job is to provide consistency. He's not done that. Besides, his ability to evaluate personnel is piss-poor. How is it that a dumb-ass such as myself understood that there shouldn't have been any QB controversy? And don't even get me started on the inconsistency of the offensive line, which IS Cable's job. Nuff said. Cable must have given one hell of a speech at half-time, eh?

Great effort today, but poor execution ultimately doomed us.

DHB didn't drop that potentially game-saving ball at the end of the game...because he didn't even put his hands in the right position to drop it. Terrible.

Why is Boller in the shotgun on third and three and fourth and three after just getting into the game? Is that leading with our strength? Does that make sense?

Too many brain farts killed an otherwise winnable game. Kudos to the offense for putting up points.

Sorry Panty, but I think Mr. Ford could have decided not to catch the ball. Clearly, the anointing of Ford as a future star in this league was a bit presumptuous. He was terrible today, and probably cost us the game more than any player on offense.

The "Vike"s "HC" deserved to be fired...

Singletary deserves to be fired...

Does Fisher???

Now just what the hell merits the firing of Cable...Look at the mess he inherited and the job he has done with it....There is nothing that suggests to me he should be on the chopping block...

You have a "HateTrip" with the man but I don't....I have no answer for your desired bashing...Just your own personal perception...And like I posted earlier...Perhaps you need to adjust your vision...

For example...At no time does a "WR" have the decision NOT to catch a pass...It's his job to get open and make that grab...It's the "QB" who has to make the decision where to go with it...That's where that responsibility lays...NOT with the receiver...

Re: "JustCrap"...He played well in this game...The loss is not on him....He made mistakes late after getting his bell rung but I have been there a time or two also...It's tough playing threw that...

I have always believed that toughness is shown after the hit...It should be easy for a guy with his health intact to play his game...It's tough only after that health is taken away....

I can't sway from that now and hold "JC" accountable for his mistakes when he came back in "Half-Witted" after getting his head taken off...He was late making decisions but also had a few good ones too at the end....Just a shameful way to lose it...

Re: "DHB"...

Apparently he never saw the last pass thrown his way...He never made an attempt at the ball...But the pass was on target on time so that's on "DHB"....He played well but at the end in crucial time everyone had a let-down including him....

The "D" was very good early on....That lapsed later....

"ST"s failed us...

Coaching GamePlan failed in the way I feared as posted before this game...They were weak against the pass and we went after it but we needed to stick to the run and keep the ball out of their hands...That was a coaching decision failure...

So where do we now stand...In deep shit I'm afraid needing allot of help to make it in...

Hard to put a finger on any single thing. Strangely, it seemed like the Raiders put up a decent effort today (mostly by McFadden), but critical breakdowns on defense and special teams cost them.

IMO, Ricky Brown was a liability in the middle. While McClain has been somewhat unspectacular in his rookie season, he's been a reliable tackler, and his absence hurt us. I'm pretty sure I saw Brown whiff on a couple chances today.

Another note, if Cable didn’t waste his last challenge on the sideline TD run, he would have had it to negate the TD catch that was clearly out of bounds. How does an official who is practically on his knees and staring right at the line miss that call?

Conversely, the officials initially made the right call on the early INT, only to change their mind and force the Raiders to use a challenge.

Overall, a winnable game. Now we are in a big hole.

2:26 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

One More Note:

The 4 pts that were taken from us early on that bogas holding call to void a "TD" were the difference in this game...

We would have been down by only 3 and had the option to kick a "FG"....Twice...Than had a shot in "OT"....

The damn arrogant "Zebra"s took that opportunity away...

SD is pounding KC and placing themselves firming back into AFCW contention... soon to be one game up on the Raiders.

For the Raiders to win the division now, KC and SD each need to drop one more game (assuming SD wins today) and the Raiders need to win out.

A win today would have put the Raiders in charge of their own destiny (after a SD win over KC).

J. Campbell 21/30 324yds 2 "TD"s

1st dns 21 to 19...

About the Boller 4th and three...And the preceding third and three...

If you're NOT going to kick, why do you put him in the shotgun on both plays and throw the ball? You ask Boller to gain three and not McFadden over two successive downs?

McFadden averaged 7.7 yards per carry today. Bush averaged 4.4.

Mr Hyde is back. Particularly on the defensive side.

So disappointed. Wasted a great performance by McFab and Campbell.

Should have stuck the dagger in when they were up 24-10 and had the ball. Instead, went 3 and out and let Jax get back in it with big plays. That's on the D. Totally.

Things that stuck out to me on that side is that Ricky Brown is not a good MLB. New guy Jarvis Moss made a huge miss on the sideline on the big TD run.

And while DHB made a couple of pedestrian catches, he missed the big one late, looking totally awkward on the play as the ball sailed through his hands.

Need to win out and get lots of help for playoffs.

I kinda figured there would be someone here whining about this while ignoring the WR glamor-boy Ford's moronic fucking fumble that LOST THE GAME!

Sure, a miracle catch there would have been nice.

Nicer yet for a fucking moron to return a kick with BOTH HANDS ON THE FUCKING BALL.

The defense and STs lost this game and we still have people whining about DHB... unfuckingbelievable...

I outa here...

3:49 PM
Blogger x said...

Not whining or pinning it on DHB, just pointing out the obvious. It's just that when you draft a WR in the top 10, you expect those catches. Miracle catch? I don't think so.

Agree about Ford though. His fumble was huge.

3:55 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Gary, for someone who's always blaming the QB for poor WR production, the sideline pass to DHB was right on the money.

So why should DHB get a pass in today's loss (pun intended)?

The Raiders drafted this guy largely because he played in a "pro-style" offense in college. That means he should have been plug-n-play from Day 1.... obviously not the case.

Today he made his first catch in over a month and missed a critical pass that went untouched between his arms.

DHB has fallen far short of expectations, and the Raiders still find themselves without a consistently reliable WR.

That's worthy of discussion.

Now as I see it that's spreading the ball around damn well and I don't see a single issue here regarding our Receivers...They didn't contribute to losing this game...Only 9 balls out of 30 hit the ground....They all missed something and they all did their jobs...

Can anyone see an issue here with our Runners...Again I sure as hell don't...But if you do please speak up....I'm old and might miss something....

Passing:
J. Campbell 21/30 324yds 2 TDs

Here lays an issue..."JC" when down...What choice did we have on the fly but to see what Kile has...He failed to prove himself worthy...They got the ball...They scored pts...

"RT"....

I don't know...I was thinking the same thing but when "JC" came back in he also threw that football directly to a "DB"....Fortunately he couldn't catch...

I suspect the coaches wanted to catch them off guard...They would expect us to run with the 3rd "QB" and crowded the box...Kile failed to fool anyone except his coaches...He had Murphy open but threw high...Than he threw directly to the "LB"...Or maybe it was a "S"....Don't remember...

Raiders 35-34 "V"....

So here we have it:

"KC" @ 8-n-5
"SD" @ 7-n-6
Raiders 6-n-7
Donks @ 3-n-10...Damn I love that!!!...

Raiders need to go 9-n-7 by running the table...

Den/Indy/KC....

It's doable if we can keep the "Zebra"s out of it...

"KC" needs to lose 1/2....
StL/Tenn....

Ah!...Get Matt to mail it in one more week and that might happen...But "StL" can't compete outside their weak-ass West...

Meanwhile out in Tenn the owner has put Fisher's head on the chopping block....I fear he has lost control of his team...There are players who want him gone so will prolley lay down to insure that happens...I doubt they win again this season....

"SD" needs to lose 1/3....
SF/Cin/Den....

WoW!!!...Fat Chance...Did anyone see the total shellacking the "MuleHead"s -n- Cincy took...They be out of it...Any hope "SF" makes a game of it is lunatic at best...Again outside their weak-ass West they be nothing to fear...

So now comes to the very painful reality Boyz:

It was nice but for all practical purposes it's prolley over....

Raiders 8-n-8.....

We slap the "MuleHead"s playing angry but prolley give it up to Indy only to come back and angrily slap that "Squaw" Bitch's Ass knocking them out of the "PO"s...

"SD" will prolley advance as a result...

PantyRaider...Un-Popular Vision No Doubt!!!!/_

Wish I could change it but threw all our advances some stubborn baggage continues to drag our asses down...

Inconsistency -n- "Zebra"s....

I too am PO'd and dissapointed.

But....

1. This is the first December in years where we actually played meaningful games.

2. In years past, the score of this game would have been 45 to 3 - a total team collapse and blowout.

3. I actually think Cable has done a good job. He inherited a disaster of team with a team-killer bust of a first round QB that he was obligated to play.

4. We're still a few players from being dominating, but this year was one hell of an improvement over prior years/teams.

5. Last year we barely hung-on to beat Phillyl, KC, Denver and Bengals. The only uplifting game was the 4th quarter comback win over the Steelers. This year we blew out Denver, swept SD, won in OT against KC and blew Seattle of the field.

One wish: somebody please beat the damned Chargers and put them into our rear-view mirror.

A very tough loss to swallow.

The D and ST gave up way too many back breaking, impact plays which led to JAX ringing up 31 2nd half points.

The Ford fumble was a pivotal moment in the game.

I'm very interested to see how the Raiders finish out the season.

With this loss and the Chargers win, I hate to say it, but I see the Chargers winning the division at 10-6, KC going 9-7 (loss to StL, win over Tenn, loss to us), and us playing the spoiler by crashing KC's party on the last game of the season.

I hope I'm wrong and we run the tables and end up in a 3 way tie at 9-7 and win the division.

I echo TinFoil's thoughts and appreciate us playing meaningful games in December. I like our team's spirit and effort. We have a very good nucleus of young players to continue to climb the competitive ladder.

Correction on my earlier post - Raiders had a 24-14 lead with about 10 minutes to go in the 3rd, stopped Jax on a 3 and out, and had a chance to take over.

I was thinking the game might turn into something like the Denver or Seattle games. Wishfully, it turns out.

Instead, Raiders went four and out and then allowed the 70+ yard run by the second string RB on a 3rd and 2, letting him turn the corner and tightrope the sideline.

That, of course, was followed by the fumbled kickoff.

Could we at least find a STs coach that can remind our KRs to wrap up with both hands as a PRIORITY?

Ever?

They could pay me $1000 a year to stand on the sidelines and just go up to him and say "BALL SECURITY FIRST" before he trots on the field... that could be my only job.

I'd be good at it too...

Gary, for someone who's always blaming the QB for poor WR production, the sideline pass to DHB was right on the money.

So why should DHB get a pass in today's loss (pun intended)?
>>>

Because there is maybe only 2-3 receivers in this league that could have made that catch?

JFC... he would have had to make a diving grab fighting off tough (perhaps illegal) coverage. If your going to tell me that ball was perfect or something you are on drugs. It was slightly overthrown...

Watch it again and name the receivers in this league that could routinely make that catch...

Your fascination/obsession with this kid is borderline insanity.

We score 31 points and you're obsessing over a WR.

You started this discussion, so don't project your obsession for DHB on me. I merely responded to you.

Sure it's a tough play, but catchable. Ford has been making tougher catches since he's been in the fray.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that play was why the Raiders drafted DHB.

Anyway, I already placed the weight of this loss on D and ST. 31 points should be enough to win every week.

I believe the Raiders really suffered without McClain in the middle of the D. Perhaps with the exception of Wimbley, Raiders LBs were a huge liability on Sunday.

5:08 AM
Blogger H said...

I was without internet access on Sunday so I haven’t read all the responses. Therefore, here’s my analysis.

The offense played more than well enough to win. 476 yards of offense.

The defense played well enough to win. Early on they kept the Jax from making good on short field opportunities. Not having McClain hurt us in run defense. His ability to plug the gaps and fight off blockers has been immeasurable of late now that he is getting up to speed in the NFL.

Jason Campbell played well enough to win. 70% completion, 324 yards 2 TD’s 0 interceptions 10 completions to those wide receivers (Murphy had 6, DHB 2 and Ford 2).

Our rushers played well enough to win. 153 yards, 6.1 average 2 TD’s.

Special teams let is down. Jacoby Ford’s fumble hurt, but I have a hard time being overly critical of a rookie that kept us in the game against the Chefs and has two returns for TD’s. The poor coverage on the kickoff after Campbell took the team down the field to tie the game, hurt even more. A long field, with a stop or turnover could have given us a chance in regulation or sent it to overtime.

I’m not inclined to be overly critical of the defense on Jax’s last TD. With under two minutes in a tie game, they are already in field goal range, you have to get very aggressive and try to create a turnover. Didn’t work.

But, it gave us enough time to tie the game again. Campbell was moving the team, but I do think there was way too much time setting up on one play. Not sure what the confusion was.

Cable had the team ready to play. I liked his challenge in the first half. Under four minutes, all three timeouts remaining, nothing to lose. The one in the second half was too iffy in a close game to risk a timeout. Could have used it on that play where it took forever to get everyone lined up.

This team is on the cusp. We are a missed field goal and two special teams breakdowns from being 8-5.

But, we are still in this thing. The Dolts did their part. Forget Cassel being out, the Chefs couldn’t do squat, passing, rushing, special teams. Nada, nothing, zip, zero. Sixty-seven total yards. That’s pretty much taking it in the shorts when you have to go on the road again. Albeit against a team that lost 31-13. But, the Neutered Sheep are 4-2 at home and the Chefs are 2-5 on the road.

The light hasn’t been turned out just yet. The Chefs were supposed to run away with the division or the Dolts were supposed to make their normal late season run. Didn’t happen. We’ve cleared the first hurdle, we can compete with virtually anyone in the league and dominate some. Solidify the OL and this team could go on a 3-5 year run at the top. Maybe more if they handle personnel properly.

As of now my second and third favorite teams in the league are the Neutered Sheep and the Whinners.

Anyway, that’s my look at it with no influence.

One more item. Please, for future reference let’s not have anyone looking forward on the schedule saying which games are NOT must win games. When you are trying to get back to respectability and compete for the division, they are ALL must win games.

Gary,

"while ignoring the WR glamor-boy Ford's moronic fucking fumble that LOST THE GAME!"

The guy's a fourth round rookie who is the main reason we beat the Chefs to stay in this thing. He has made some of the thoughest catches on the team this season and has two kickoff returns for touchdowns.

And, I guess the Pittsburgh game was still not a "must win game."

By the way, the offense overcame that error and got us back in the game. It was the Boler interception and the poor coverage that led to Jax's final 10 points and the final score.

Yeah, it's all Jocoby Ford's fault, I say we cut him, what say you?

Yes... it looks like Campbell is settling down and could be a top-notch QB... why it took him 8 games to figure out how to play football again is anyones guess. McF and Bush are two young RB's that if they stay healthy, should have us at the top of the league in rushing for years to come. I like our young D-line... and our o-line isn't really that bad either. What we still need, IMO, is DBs again... yes agonizingly we have to keep banging on it... both through the draft and free agency.

Huff is not a premier safety... a better nickle than anything else.

Also, I think Jax exposed another "blueprint" to defeating the Raiders... ignore our corners almost entirely and just keep hitting the TE's across the middle.

Asum will prolly become the most bored person in the NFL over the next 3 games. Especially if the DB's over the middle keep habitually running 2-3 yards behind their assignment so they can make a sure tackle after the completion.

Honestly... do we have a DB coach PURPOSELY teaching our players that tackles are more important than knockdowns and interceptions???

" ignore our corners almost entirely and just keep hitting the TE's across the middle."

If McClain is back that becomes less of a problem. He's better than folks give him credit in pass coverage. He disrupts the TE's route.

Ahh, you mean like the 4th down pass he knocked straight into the air that killed a drive to lose a game early season? He's won us a game and lost us two now, IMO.

What does everyone see in this guy that I am missing?

As a rookie, he might be a guy that can help the team some, especially if he learns how to carry the ball... but I don't understand the Raider-fan hard-ons for him.

"Once again... what does draft position have to do with anything??"

When did I say anything about draft position? I simply said he was drafted to make those plays.

You're making way too much of this. My take on the game is above. I blame D and ST. I did not blame DHB for the loss.

31 pts should have been plenty to win.

As for your comment on draft position, tell that to the Raiders accountants.

Draft position can be the difference between making $20M guaranteed v. a small signing bonus. By extension, there must be a certain expectation that comes with making the big bucks.

Based on guaranteed monies, the Raiders have no choice but to bring back DHB next year and try it all over again.

My guess the WR corp will remain unchanged in 2011. As history tells us, there's no reason to believe otherwise. Hopefully, experience (and health) will catch up to this group and they will play better than they have the last couple years.

As for being overly critical of DHB, I don't think so.

He's 40-50 yards downfield and doesn't see the ball until it's through his arms. How far does he expect Campbell to throw it? That was a perfect pass. It's a real shame!

NYRaider,

Not necessarily so. The cap rules are gone when it comes to guaranteed monies. We didn't take any future hits by releasing Russell.

I'm not on the Dump DHB wagon at this point, but future cap hits and the new CBA aren't a consideration at this point.

Might I say that is the exact same scenario that occurred at the end of the ’99 season, in KC no less. It was the start of a three year run at the top of the AFC West and provided one of the top quotes of the season.

As the team was walking off the field after winning 41-38, Darrel Russell was asked about the game by a TV reporter. His answer, “We going home, they going home.”

Just a little Raider History for your enjoyment.

He doesn't know why two consecutive pass plays were called. Big Fat Hairy Deal. It was immediately after the game and he hadn't met with the coaches to review the game.

It's pretty evident they weren't the right choice considering the results.

Too much about nothing. Cable is clearly frustrated about the game and, IMO, wishes he had more authority to call the offense, but he doesn't.

Overall, I think Cable has done a decent job this year as HC. Just look what he's had to work with.

It will be interesting to see what pressure, if any, Jackson places on the Raiders to promote him. I don't see him getting a HC offer anywhere else, although stranger things have happened.

Many people in the industry view employment with the Raiders an impossible situation (for players and coaches), and they may overlook Jackson's record here and go after him.

That Springer influence is in everything...Gotta have a scandal...

The last thing we need now is to disrupt the team chemistry with a change at "HC" but also Hue is well worth keeping...I think most want to give all the credit for the Raiders' turn-around to Hue because he was the new face when the changes became most apparent...Fact is the changes were already there but just not yet completed...

Al's plan is working...We don't know yet where it's going and we don't know yet the full parameters of that plan but it is definitely working whether the "Mediot"s and disgruntled fans want to give him the credit he deserves/earned or not...It may be slow maturing but as you posted it will prolley be a very stable outcome for years to come...

Perhaps Hue could be elevated without making the move to "HC"....In the past we had an Assistant "HC-O"....

The moves I would project as more likely possibilities are at "STC" -n- "DC"...

"ST"s has at times been our Hero and at times our Goat...

The same can be said for the "D"....

Not to say Hue has been completely void of disruptions mind you but I believe most of his failure has been the result of piss poor play at "QB" -n- the "OL"...Injuries have had their affect also....Get stability there and I think this "O" will be very damn productive and consistent...

We have the young "S"s that are developing...

"LB"s are much improved but perhaps could still use an up-grade...

"DL" depth...

Really the one thing that would help this squad most of all would be an up-grade at "DC"....

Re: "O"....

"QB" play has been our biggest ???..

Is "JC" the long tern solution....I don't think so...

Vince Young or Vick would be substantial up-grades to that position ....If you don't think so just look at Tenn without "VY"...Not even contenders...

"OL" especially the right side...Looper -n- Campbell may yet be the solutions but who knows..."C" is an on/off position too...

#1 "WR" threat...I'm still pimping Plexico "GunDumb" Burris....

Everything else seems filled and very stable baring injury....

The "OC" is a keeper but "WR" coach is obviously lacking...

Minn loses and gains and loses "WR"s but NO matter because Brett can no longer get it done...

Tenn loses their "QB" and than their "WR"s don't do squat...

"KC" loses their "QB" and now their "WR"s can't do squat....48 total yds including "TE"s/"RB"s....

After reviewing the game summaries, plays by down, and my own recollections, the game's tide turned against us largely due to 3 ST miscues and 3 defensive breakdowns.

Instead of the Raiders forcing JAX to earn the victory, earn their 2nd half points, we virtually gift wrapped it with short fields and quick offensive scoring drives by JAX.

Special Teams:

On the 3rd Q opening kickoff; SeaBass inexplicably kicks a short ball to the JAX 21 yard line which is returned to the JAX 43 yard line.

The Ford fumble setting up JAX at the Oak 21 yard line.

End of game KR by JAX for 65 yards to Oak 30 yard line.

Summary: 3 short fields for JAX offense.

Defense:

1st drive of 2nd half; Jason Hill beats Huff deep for 46 yard TD. Huff gave Hill a huge cushion yet still allowed Hill to run right by him.

Rashard Jennings 74 yard TD run on 3rd and 2. Raiders D did a poor job containing Jennings and using the sideline as the 12 defender. Newly acquired DE Jarvis Moss completely whiffed on an open field tackle near the sideline.

30 yard TD run of MJD blasting through a huge hole on the 1st play to put JAX up 38-31. If nothing else, in spite of being in FG position already, MAKE the team earn the points.

Summary: JAX scored 4 2nd half TDs on a total of ONLY 13 plays. This is that old Raider D bugaboo of giving up 30+ yard, back breaking BIG plays.

That was a great throw and catch...Hard to defend when everything is on the money like that...

In the 2nd half they made several big plays...They executed very well...They also got the calls while we were out of challenges so were gifted one "TD"...I figure that was 4 pts due to the fact they were still in "FG" range....

Calico,

I forgot about the short kickoff, that was weird.

But, I would say the defense was put defending short fields the whole game. Twice in the first quarter they pushed Jax back out of field goal range and once Jax did it to themselves.

The primary breakdows that wound up coasting the game was the interception thrown by Boler and the long return after we had tied the game up with just over two minutes.

By the way, I would agree to some extent about questioning the Boler pass plays. Just punt the ball away and take your chances on defense. You have a Pro Bowl punter for a reason.

I like Hue Jackson, but he screwed the pooch on those two plays.

Bottom line, we still got a shot. The way they've played this year with the potential of being better I vote for bringing back Cable.

On defense we are getting better pressure than we have in years. Keep Marshall.

I would take a look at special teams though.

Overall though, this has been a huge leap over the last seven years, primarily due to Cables influence over the players.

So what if coaches have differences. Look at the egos you are dealing with.

Almost every coach on this team had worked with Cable before he took control of this team.

The wind was a huge factor too...One punt was also short and out of bounds so it wasn't only "Jano"...

I didn't like the "K" to the 21 but maybe that was a wind factor too...

Also their "PR"/"KR" misjudged the ball and muffed it so the wind must have been playing havoc with everyone...

I could also suspect it may have been a factor with the misjudged pass by "DHB"...He put his arms out but never made a play for the ball like he didn't know where it was...It may have sailed out of position in the wind...That's just speculation but it was a long high pass so the wind may have affected it as well as the punts/kicks....

Not much I can do about it but the positive feeling swing in the balance....

He's 40-50 yards downfield and doesn't see the ball until it's through his arms. How far does he expect Campbell to throw it? That was a perfect pass. It's a real shame!

Ahh I see.

You think a "perfect pass" is something that a WR going full speed has to lay out for to catch.

Myself... I think a perfect pass is one that hits a WR in stride and in his hands without any extension.

You know... like a ball you and I could catch.

You are a VERY strange person if you HONESTLY think there was anything "perfect" about that pass.

Catchable... sure.

Perfect?

WTF ever.

Draft position can be the difference between making $20M guaranteed v. a small signing bonus. By extension, there must be a certain expectation that comes with making the big bucks.

Only if the criteria is that a team is under a tight budget and is reluctant to spend money.

Is that something you consider to be a problem with the Raiders or something?

Or are you under the impression the NFL is still under a salary cap or something?

Or are you simply wildly throwing shit at the wall hoping something sticks?

Man, one mention of Heyward-Bey's drop and I'm pounced on by the apologists. While ST and D were the main failings v Jax, any of the half dozen receivers selected well after him in the draft probably would have made that catch.

It would have put the Raiders at about the Jax 30 with a minute and a half to play. The clock and lack of timeouts wouldn't have been a factor.

One of several coulda-shoulda plays though, so I'm not pinning the loss on the guy.

I'll just say one more thing and refrain on any further DHB commentary, since he is a good, hard working kid and I do wish him success - that was a near perfect pass and the only reason it appeared he had to "lay out" to catch it is because he left his feet early and his awkwardness led your eyes to believe that pass was tougher than it actually was to catch. I've watched it several times and the TV crew were of the same opinion, if that matters.

We can just agree to disagree on that play.

With all that's been invested in him, he'll surely get a third year to improve and I'll be rooting for him. I'm just happy that it appears he won't be taking up a starting spot any longer until he does improve.

Not understanding the draft position comment....bottom line is that if you draft a guy in the top 10, he should be a blue chip starter for you. The Raider mistakes at the top of the draft have been a primary reason for their slow climb from the abyss these last eight years.

Eight years! Not sure this was the "vision" of Al Davis.

Agreed X. You can't expect the QB to throw the ball any better. H-Bey mistimed his jump, period. No two ways about it.
