One Postgame Take

The Raiders have now lost four out of their last seven. In those four losses, they have given up 146 points, or an average of 36.5 points. Not once this season have the Raiders held an opponent to less than 23 points.

Forget stats, look at the scores of our games and tell me you can go far in the NFL when handing out points like Christmas candy.

You can look at this game by itself, of course. You can say it's the Packers, and that's what the Packers do, they score a ton of points.

Then again, you could say it's the Raiders, and that's what the Raiders do, they give a ton up.

This is not trending well. We need to win three out of the final three games to give ourselves a slim chance of making the playoffs. The Broncos have a one-game lead with three left, and they own the tiebreaker.

Winning two out of three probably means that we sit home for the ninth straight year, and that we improve upon last year's record by a measly one victory. If that happens, it will be nice to have finally ascended the apparent Mt. Olympus of a winning record. But the progress of the Raiders has become so drawn out, and so incremental, as to be painful. The supposed Team of The Decades is on the verge of taking an entire decade (or more) to reach the playoffs again.

Here was a must-win game, and the Raiders weren't even competitive for the second week in a row. Go ahead and tell me I'm not being optimistic enough. Tell me it will all be okay.

But when the Raiders get outscored 80 to 30 in successive weeks with the playoffs on the line, this is what you get: the return of the Clown Car.

The playoffs, once so promising, remain possible. But the Clown Car needs to be shut down immediately, and the Raiders need to return to playing tough, competitive football now. The margin of error no longer exists.

I reiterate from the last take:

Well, this team was better prepared, week in, week out, last year with Tom Cable and John Marshall.

The game plans lately seem very erratic on both sides of the ball. This team seems to have regressed, not progressed.

I'm not one to make excuses, but the players that got us to a higher level of play on offense are mostly out with injuries.

McFadden
Ford
Moore
Campbell

With this group out, Reece and Boss should be getting more chances.

If you look at the numbers, the Raiders were a much better scoring offense behind Campbell. Part of that may be attributed to the health of key players, but also due to fall-off in O-line play and the alarming number of INTs that Palmer has thrown.

Until yesterday, throwing into 4 defenders seemed unfathomable.

The defense is a complete mess, and it starts with Bresnahan.

The injuries on offense don't explain the meltdowns on defense.

The Raiders are 28th in the NFL in points allowed.

The progress of this team is still proceeding at a turtle's pace.

I agree with RT... the offense has excuses... losing their starting QB and also the CLEAR team MVP (IMO) McF, plus what, 4 WR's?? mid-season would send nearly every offense in the NFL into a tail-spin. But the defense?? They don't even show up until after half GAME AFTER GAME... the players aren't being coached up, they are being coached DOWN... McClain and Huff are both regressing... and Huff is a vet. Branch is the only player on the entire defense that has improved since last season arguably. How many pre-snap penalties did they have in the first half before they figured out Rodgers cadence? There should be someone somewhere telling the morons that that is not acceptable.

The team has pretty much won every single game when the defense has shown up... but it is a grease fire more often than not.

I'd fire Breshnahan the second the last tick of the clock this season.

There was a reason he was nearly out of football before the season started.

The thing about Bresnehan that I don't get is that we've been down this road so many times with predictable results: the underqualified and/or outmoded coordinator or coach.

Did anyone really expect Bresnehan to come out of the UFL, three years removed from the NFL, and establish an elite defensive unit?

To be honest, only with myopic thinking.

It was Al's biggest failures in his later years... his stubborn insistence on meddling with the defense... thus making it impossible to hire elite DC's.

There should be a lot of interested candidates next year... our line is pretty good, and all they have to do is coach up the secondary.

I'm pretty disappointed with Biekert as LB's coach... he isn't doing ANYTHING with McClain... or maybe he is uncoachable?

RWood is doing pretty good with what he as to work with in the CB's... I wouldn't mind him getting a promotion.

Well there is no more Al, so first things first, we need a bad ass for a DC. an already established bad ass DC.

btw, this playoff thing aint over!!! not by a long shot. things may look bleak but this is called adversity. peoples true colors show when there is adversity. it becomes very clear who and what you are.

Bresnahan must go. We should have an easier time attracting a top notch D coordinator, without Al dictating the defensive schemes. I think Bresnahan was our only option.

We need to get Moore and Ford back ASAP. They open up the offense and allow Bush to bust up D's.

Definitely not minty fresh, but this is the first time we have had any playoff talk in Dec in a LONG time.

In the meantime, we can only hope that somehow, some way, the D unit gets it's act together for Detroit (do or die game) and the final 3 push.

Is it just me or does this team seem to be lacking a sense of urgency, energy, and swagger lately?

What this teams desperately needs more than anything is to start FAST vs. Detroit, play with the lead and re-gain a sense of confidence that is sorely missing.

Due to some untimely, significant injuries and an unreliable, porous D, the Raiders have taken a step back from 2010 to 2011.

Yes, we are 7-6 with a chance to improve upon last year's 8-8 mark but these stats are telling:

2010
O: Avg 25.6 points; ranked #6
D: Avg 23.1 points; ranked #20

2011
O: Avg 22.3 points; ranked #16
D: Avg 27.2 points; ranked #28

We are scoring 3 points less while giving up 4 more ... a 7 point swing. I can understand the slight drop in production on offense due to the injuries but what's the D's excuse?

2 games from this season jump out.

The Bills game where we gave up 38 points after being up 21-3 at half.
We lose 38-35.

The Donkeys game where we gave up 38 points after being up by 17-7 at half. We lose 38-24.

Play decent defense or our 2010 average of 23 points allowed and this is 2 victories which is the difference between being 9-5 (playoff bound) and 7-6 (on the outside looking in).

The 4 blowout losses to the Pats, KC, Miami, and GBay wouldn't matter.

The margin for error due to our D is paper thin.

17 Jan 01 SD @ OAK

"Donkey"!!! 8-n-5
15 Dec 18 NE @ DEN
16 Dec 24 DEN @ BUF
17 Jan 01 KC @ DEN

That or they lose to "KC" and we win out so we have the tie breaking in the AFCW 4-2/3-3...The way "KC" has played and now fired their "HC" it's questionable what they can do...Than the fact that the "Donkey" plays "KC" the week after we play them so likely they will lose as many teams do the week after playing the Raiders...Look at Miami!!!

No guarantees that we can beat Detroit??..."NE" will most like take down that "Donkey"??...Baltimore will take down "SD" who are now just one game behind us??

The defense is on the decline because of the utter lack of offense. Simply put, we're back to where the defense spends far too much time on the field. When you're losing the TOP by 2 to 1, that's usually the problem. There is currently an utter lack of offense.

There is an utter lack of offense because we're working with out second unit, from RB to WR, and a QB who wasn't even here until the sixth week of the season.

This is CRAZY!

"Of the Raiders league-high 130 penalties, 45 resulted in first downs for the opponent. Also, those penalties kept alive drives that resulted in points 16 times.
The 45 first downs as a result of penalties are the fourth-most since the merger in 1970."

..end quote....

45 first downs and 16 scores from penalties ALONE... amazing we are still in the playoff picture!

Add to that the undisciplined play in keeping assignments, playing gaps, etc... the D is either one of the stoopedist D's in NFL history, or just the most undisciplined.

Can this be changed overnight? The D played great in beating one of the NFL elite teams... Houston.

Three games like that maybe? I am not holding my breath.

This team is doing well, considering: New Coach, New Owner, New QB (times two). When I see the analysts talking smack about us leading the league in penalties, there are always two or three just tailing us, so if scoring's up, reasonable penalties are a non issue, but the fundamentals... I think that we can all agree that if we were cutting checks to these guys, we might be scratching our heads with Heyward Bey's poor patterns and Palmer's inability to fall on a ball. Unconditional allegiance to these Raiders, but I will alwauy question the (apparent lack of) authority.

I reiterate once again:

Well, this team was better prepared, week in, week out, last year with Tom Cable and John Marshall.

The game plans lately seem very erratic on both sides of the ball. This team seems to have regressed, not progressed.
----

Now, I like Hue Jackson, and he may be able to pull it together, but time is running out for this season. Injuries may have played a part, but not with the way we looked totally inept against Miami.

The last thing I want is to start over with another new head coach, so Hue, get it together.

"The defense is on the decline because of the utter lack of offense. Simply put, we're back to where the defense spends far too much time on the field. When you're losing the TOP by 2 to 1, that's usually the problem. There is currently an utter lack of offense."
--------------------------------
BR, your comment sounds right in theory but is simply not true.

A perfect example is the game last week where we had more TOP than GBay but still lost by 30 points.

2 to 1 would be 40:00 to 20:00 TOP.

Here are our 6 losses;

Lose to Bills 38-35
Buff 30:47 Oak 29:13 (-1:34 TOP)

Lose to NE 31-19
NE 26:40 Oak 33:20 (+6:40 TOP)

Lose to KC 28-0
KC 33:37 Oak 26:23 (-7:14 TOP)

Lose to DEN 38-24
Den 31:51 Oak 28:09 (-3:42 TOP)

Lose to MIA 34-14
MIA 38:20 Oak 21:40 (-16:40 TOP)

Lose to GBay 46-16
GBay 28:40 Oak 31:20 (+2:40 TOP)

The only game where there was a significant margin in TOP was vs. MIA which pounded the run 40+ times.

6:42 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

BTW, I agree that typically winning the TOP is important.

However, as I see it, the Raiders D has been giving up quick, easy TD drives that is compounded by the offense's inability to convert 3rd downs and working from short fields, or playing from behind 2+ scores.

As always, it takes all 3 units executing their part for a team victory to be realized.

Such team victories as the Texans and Browns games are classic examples of each unit picking each other up at critical times in the game to create the opportunity to win.

Each unit didn't play a stellar game for 4 quarters in these 2 games but found a way to make enough game changing, dynamic plays when necessary to tip the balance in the Raiders favor.

Quite frankly, you can't point the finger at just one player or unit. As a team, the Raiders need to find a way to get a "W".

Go back to the early part of the season and despite the loss of our off season prep this team was fairly well prepared to play week in and week out...Now however the past 2 weeks we have appeared in total disarray almost across the board...

I already posted as regards the loss of Al's hand upon this team but will do so again...It shows in a big way and it applies...

We now find ourselves with a rookie "HC" with far too much on his plate and a rookie front office trying to hold everything together until the end of the season....All the while being destroyed by penalties both justified and BOGAS!!!...A "DC" who has definitely lost his way...Rookie "DB" coach in Woodson...INJURIES!!!...Replacement players still trying to gel...Personal disruptions in the form of "DeathRo" and "CJ"s pain and subsequent non-performance...

We no longer have that firm hand of wisdom upon this team to give it the guidance it needs...Nor do we have that firm hand of discipline to keep things in order...That which many have tried to portray as a "Meddling Old Man"...Well folks what you see now is the aftermath of that loss...Undeniably so!!!

So now what...In Hue we trust???...Can he get threw to this team and bring them back to the energy level needed to post another "V"???...Is there anyone left in the front office who can stand up and get something energized???

This is the plain simple reality of the moment...Now no doubt some will post that this should have been taken care of years ago so we were better prepared...Prepared with what???...Who was there who could put their hand upon this team the way Al Davis did??...That's an irreplaceable hand!!!..Now this team will have to find a new way without it but don't expect this to be a quick or easy transition...It will take time and that folks may cost us this season???

Sucks but that's the reality at hand and ignoring it won't change a thing!!!!

Thanks, Scorpio - I've been in and out.

To back up my point about the D... It's true, the D can't buy a 3 and out. But our offense is constantly going 3 and out, giving the D little time to adjust. They get thrown right back out there for another 10 play drive. Then the O goes 3 and out again...

I think the root of the problem is injuries. We all know that Jackson likes to fit the play to the player, not the other way around. He hasn't had the necessary speed on the field for many weeks. His playbook is quite large and uses a ton of plays that require speed. But McFadden, Ford and Moore are all off the field. While Bush is good, he's doesn't come anywhere to approaching DMac in speed. So Hue has been operating - not erratic, but limited. We're down to DHB, two guys coming off leg injuries and an aging veteran.

I haven't seen Hue try a load of the stuff he used to pull out regularly in the earlier part of the season. But he doesn't have the personnel to pull it off until the speed comes back.

Now, you can argue that there should have been a "plan B" in place, but the reality is that this entire season was based on speed, and right now we don't have it.

Calico, I don't think the game long stat gives you the proper picture, especially when you've fallen back by three scores. The other team is going to start letting you pick up first downs so long as you advance the clock. I think in order to get the proper picture, you have to look at the TOP through the 3rd quarter only. I know that in both the Miami game and the GB game, the TOP was hideous into the 3rd quarter.

I'm not saying that the D, under Bresnahan, has been stellar. I don't think it's the scheme, he just can't seem to get the players to stay with their assignments. That's the same old problem we've had under almost every DC since Bres' first stint with us.

We've argued over the source of the problem, but I think at this point we can pretty much agree that the problem isn't Davis.

DCs just can't seem to convince them that you make the plays within within your assignment. You don't leave your assignment to go try and make a play. It's just that simple.

Granted, but in addition to what Jones commented that you can't change a defense in mid-season, let's not forget that Bresnahan was grossly underqualified for the job to begin with.

I firmly believe part of AL bringing him here was that AL expected to play a role in the defense. Without AL's input, Bresnahan is now at his worst.

I agree. More slants - or shorter quick hit routes. Add the kid from the practice squad to the active for another wr. Do something Hue! What gets me is the lack of creativity on O. Evident is the Bush heavy O. We know it, the other team knows it too. Hand off, hand off pass.
Or hand off, hand off, penalty, pass, penalty, pass punt...

Blogger Calico Jack said...

The Raiders organization, Hue Jackson, and the Raider players aren't making excuses so why are some fans making excuses?

I agree 100% with Memdf ...

Regardless of injuries, deficiencies, tendencies, or the opponent, the team needs to make adjustments in the game planning and within the game itself.

Dink and dunk, move the chains, establish a rhythm, incorporate 2 TE sets, no huddle, trick plays, etc. and force the D to adjust to us.

Creatively use Boss, Myers, Reece, and Bush in the passing attack. If necessary, use more west coast principles with the WRs.

We might not have as much speed on the field as we normally do but there is enough speed to create dynamic plays. DHB, Shillens, and Reece have good speed. A "Big" play can be generated with proper execution and creative game planning.

Please, no more excuses. It is a discredit to the fan base and the competitive spirit of the game itself.

No excuses on the defense... but there is not a team in the NFL that has lost their key offensive players (with MAYBE the exception of Hous) that isn't reeling right now.

Hell look at Chicago... lost their QB and RB and have FOUR TIMES THE DEFENSE we have and still can't eek out a win.

I dunno... either we have the worlds stupidest defensive players, or stupid coaches.

I think its a little of both.

Watch McClain jump to the left gap on a play going right at him to the right in short yardage... ummm well, maybe you can't coach this guy?

Thats a TD every time given up.

I agree with Corkran... run a 3-4 next year and take most of McClains responsibilities away.

He is a complete moron.. on and off the field.

Too expensive to cut.. so fill a defense scheme around him t hide his slowness and lack of IQ...

There is no doubt that the injuries to key skill players has had a detrimental effect on the team.

My point about "no excuses" is that as a team, we have all the tools, ability, and wherewithal to perform the tasks at hand. It is a matter of execution. Each unit needs to pick each other up and make enough plays to win.

Would I rather have McFadden, Ford, and Moore as the primary weapons vice Bush, DHB, and Shillens? Yes but there are more than enough playmakers to accomplish the goal at hand ... winning.

Ok... how do I put this any more bluntly.. if we had a MLB that stood there like a statue in his position there would have been two less scores given up last week. STAND THERE AND LET SOMEONE RUN INTO YOU... is better than McClain.

Calico, your insistence that injuries play no part in the success or failure of your season is just bizarre. We all knew going into this season that depth was going to be a problem and that injuries could sink us. Well, that simple prediction is simply coming to pass.

I'm thrilled that second teamers were able to carry the team to three consecutive victories. They certainly gave us a chance to stay in this thing. But the chickens are now coming home to roost, and we either have our play makers for the stretch, or we don't.

That's not an excuse. You go into the season with a 53 man roster, not a 22 man roster. It's simply reality. If we had our play makers, we'd be winning, but since we don't we're struggling.

That said, you go into the season to win it all. But expecting Bush to provide everything that McFadden provides is just stupid. Hue is in the position where he has to readjust his offensive philosophy to what the 2nd teamers can do, and you don't win by coming up with a brand new offensive philosophy in the middle of the season. The best you can hope for is to hold it together. They did for a few games, but now the warts are showing.

Plenty of teams in the history of the game have had their season derailed by injuries. A few teams have managed in spite of their injuries. But to say that injuries should never be factor is living in NaNa land.

8:12 AM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

Here is an additional part of the EXPLAINATION (not an EXCUSE).

When our starters first went down, their availability was somewhat of a mystery (largely because Hue plays injury info close to the vest). However, as it has become clear that opposing teams don't have to prepare for McFadden's speed, Moore's speed or Ford's speed they understand that they only need to defend against a single style of play. We are missing the "shock and awe" factor, and defenders see us coming.

Without Jones or McFadden (and Moore and Ford) Hue is trying to convert to a power running format, but that's not what we spent our training camp trying to perfect.
