A Question of Commitment

The discussion here at Raider Take has taken a turn toward the bitter, which is only natural as the Raiders have suddenly lost momentum and fallen behind the improbable Denver Broncos in the race to the playoffs.

Some of the common sentiments among the regulars here are: (1) quit talking about Tim Tebow; (2) Rolando McClain and our defense are stinking up the joint; and (3) for some reason our team is "running out of gas" and unable to overcome injuries and other assorted excuses.

Well, I'm am going to violate rule #1 above to make a point about #2 and #3.

This is from a story on Yahoo Sports: "While other players went out at night, Tebow loaded films of various offenses in his computer and studied and studied and studied until they were locked in his memory."

Now, compare this 2010 first-round pick to our 2010 first-round pick, Mr. McCLain, who was recently seen halfway across the country at the scene of a shooting. Who knows, maybe McLain is just as dedicated to his craft as Tebow, but if so, it's not showing on the field, nor in his off-the-field exploits.

I know you're all sick of Tim Tebow, but if we're wondering why our team is "running out of gas" and looking a bit lost while the Broncos have mounted an improbable surge, then I think it's an apples to apples comparison.

Both are 2010 first round draft picks. Both are supposed to be leaders of their units. Both play for teams competing for the AFC West crown. The main difference is that McClain was expected to succeed, while Tebow was not.

I don't profess to knowing exactly what is going on in the locker rooms of these respective teams, or what players are doing with each hour of their off time.

But if we're looking for clues as to why one team looks inspired while the other looks tired, then these two young leaders and first-round draft picks are probably a good place to start.

Look, the clock is bound to strike midnight on Tim Tebow at some point, and McClain and the Raiders still have time to redeem themselves. I get that. It's not over until it's over.

But it's still fair to ask why this team's progress is so painfully incremental from one year to the next, and why the team is actually regressing in points scored and points allowed. We can rule out talent. So is it injuries? Coaching? Playcalling? Perhaps.

But there's another potential factor that is hard to pin down, but that also seems increasingly likely: Dedication. Dedication to the art of winning, and doing all that it takes to master that art.

On talent alone, and injuries aside, there is no way the Raiders should be a game behind the Broncos with three to go.

Maybe this team needs something else besides improved health and better playcalling and smarter coaching.

Maybe it just needs to grow up.

I predict that the return of Moore will have a great impact this Sunday. With Moore back, even though he's been out several weeks, Detroit will have to account for blinding speed on both sides of the field. They can't count on Moore being rusty. That will force them into a lot of Cover 2s, opening the middle for Boss and Reese. It also will return the possibility of an end around, reverses and even the flea flicker.

I also agree that McClain is a problem. Not because of the intensity of his play, but because of his failure (at this point) as the QB of the defense. As the middle man in the 4-3, the MLB has to adjust players on the field prior to the snap. McClain is still not capable of doing that. He should be able to reach a point where he knows before the snap whether he's looking at a pass or running play and through which gap it will likely come.

If memory serves, it took Biekert about three years to learn that, when the light suddenly went on during the last game of 1999.

Hue has unprecedented control of a football team, what with Al dying and his son not being very interested in football operations.

Corkran speculated that Hue would pick his own GM, and bring in a DC that he is more familiar with... hopefully someone from the Ravens defensive hierarchy.

Who else is suppose to do it if Mark Davis hasn't followed football very much??

BTW... I wonder if Hue's "building a bully" mantra is hurting the defense? Defense has to be CONTROLLED rage... where you need discipline mixed with (as Romo put it) KILLING A BOAR!!

They don't have any discipline.

BTW RT... our leader (Palmer) is also a dedicated worker... the biggest difference is right now is he is trying to do too much because our running game has been nearly non-existent lately. His best game was vs SD when we also ran for 191 yards. It doesn't help that he has been behind by at least 7 every time he touches the ball lately. I doubt Tebow has even experienced something like that in any of his wins... the defense is winning those games.

Wish we had THAT luxury!

Thats kinda ironic because its Biekert that is coaching McClain right now.

I still don't get it... can't anyone just show him film and say... "The RB keeps having long runs because he ran right through the gap you abandoned... STOP IT."

I enjoyed some reporter specifically asking him why he allowed his own DT to take him out of the first GB touchdown.

I watched Morrison do that his entire career! McClain to his credit at least said he understands the mistake and will fix it.

We shall see!!

He doesn't complete a pass in the 1st 3 quarters of the game...Usually 2/10 or 3/14 while the "D" holds everything close against teams who have trouble scoring...Go look it up!!...Only in our game was that different as we had plenty of points on the board...

Than in the 4th with a lead as "D" play some stupid form of prevent and try to run down the clock Tebow comes alive and completes 70% of his passes...

Now give me a freakin break!!...If he was dedicated to "Learning" his craft and the other team's "D" than that should show up in the 1st 3 quarters wouldn't you think and he should have developed some sort of accuracy or timing with his targets!!!

Time to grow up is right. Even the Raiders most venerable player (Seymour) needs to grow up a bit.

McClain quarterbacking the defense has become somewhat comical because he’s often out of position himself. He’s a big, athletic LB who, evidently, could use a little of Tebow’s work ethic.

Overall, there are so many issues that need addressing. It’s pretty much “all of the above.”

I like Jackson and hope that he’s retained no matter the results of this season. After all, he’s a rookie HC and has had some growing pains himself. But this offseason will be time to take a hard look at the Raiders and the team philosophies.

Meanwhile, I believe 3 wins will get us in. Unlike the last two games, the Raiders need to be the team on the field that wants it more. That’s who wins football games.

That's part of what makes Tebow who he is as a player and an intense competitor.

10:01 AM
Blogger Raider Take said...

PantyRaider, I always hear how the Raiders have so much talent, and they do, even though they're in their ninth straight year of trying to notch a winning record.

They have plenty of talent. The question is: how much heart do they have?

Tebow is growing and his team is winning. McClain is regressing and his team is 3-4 over the last seven games. McClain was expected to be an impact player, Tebow was not. No one questions that Tebow is doing everything to maximize his abilities, as limited as they might be. Is McClain? If not, why?

Take the stats and injuries and excuses out of it. Let's talk commitment to excellence. Where do you see it on our defense?

You say that the Broncos' defense is winning those games.

I've got an idea: how about the Raiders defense go out and win some games? How about Seymour, Huff, McLain and Co. give our weakened offense a chance to win the game in the fourth more often? How about the defense step up its game when your starting QB goes down, like Denver's defense did when it's starting QB was benched in favor of an inexperienced Tebow?

Winning consistently in the NFL doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Winning isn't a collection of stats, nor is a team a collection of parts.

PantyRaider:

So Tebow studied other offenses. So what. Maybe McClain should study the Broncos defense to learn how to mind a gap?

Of course the Broncos are a measuring stick for the Raiders. Who else are the Raiders competing for a spot in the playoffs with?

The Broncos are the most relevant team to the Raiders right now. They are the most topical opponent of the Raiders right now.

Both teams needed their defenses to step up. Only one of them has.

Both teams have two 2010 first-round draft picks making news. One is making good news, the other is making bad news. One is on a team that is surging down the stretch, while the other is on a team that is fading down the stretch.

So forgive me for considering that character, dedication and teamwork might be at the heart of the matter, with two recent first rounders perhaps exemplifying the divide.

This take isn't about stats or position.

It's about culture, dedication and winning.

It's about two 2010 first-round draft picks exemplifying those things, or not.

The Raiders still have a chance to show up and make the playoffs.

If they don't, you can expect even more takes along these lines. Because injuries and excuses will simply not fully explain how the Raiders could have possibly let the division slip away to the Broncos.

What the hell:

Defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan is encouraged by a return of the kind of effort he witnessed during the Raiders three-game win streak...As evidence, Bresnahan points to a “rejuvenated effort” in practice and the meetings, akin to what he recalls seeing three weeks ago, when the Raiders were riding high, at 7-4 and in first place in the AFC West...The key, Bresnahan said, is getting that kind of effort and focus every week. “It’s exactly like it was three weeks ago,” Bresnahan said. “But you got to be able to do that all the time.”

This isn't me saying it, it's our coaching staff: our team has LACKED EFFORT at the most crucial period of the past nine seasons.

Not lacking fundamentals. Not even lacking focus. Lacking EFFORT.

I hadn't even seen that story before writing today's take. Now I know I'm really onto something.

Nope BR. Never said it and my previous posts were in the context of "no excuses".

As a matter of fact, I wrote,

"There is no doubt that the injuries to key skill players has had a detrimental effect on the team."

Although most everyone wants to focus on 3 key players that are missing (McFadden, Ford, Moore) being the root cause for the past 2 blow out losses, I'm not buying it.

In the 2 games combined, the Raiders have turned the ball over 6 times, had 21 penalties, and given up 345 yards of rushing.

Ask yourself this question, what is the direct correlation between McF, Ford, and Moore missing and the above #s? Nada.

I'm sorry, but "nada" is not the answer I come up with. Regarding the 345 yards rushing - you're right. That comes from the LBs failing to cover their gaps.

But as for interceptions, one can often blame those on BOTH the WR and the QB. And I'd point out that Palmer is playing because of injury himself. So Campbell, Ford and Moore going down have a great deal to do with the turnovers.

The penalties I believe are coming because of the sudden lack of outside speed. The linemen are jumping early in an attempt to make outside blocks. I'd be willing to bet that most of the false starts are coming from linemen attempting to get to outside blocks.

But, really, in regard to penalties, we get those when we're winning. We always get them. We're the Raiders! The penalties go with the eye patch. Through 50 years, 3 owners, fifteen head coaches, 16 division titles, and five conference titles the Raiders are just an undisciplined team. At least that's the NFL's explanation.(That's sarcasm, by the way.)

3:19 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

BR,

You've stooped to a new low when you blame the INTS and penalties on injuries.

This one takes the cake for a lack of common sense,

"The penalties I believe are coming because of the sudden lack of outside speed."

Huh?

I agree that penalties are in fact a non issue, IF AND ONLY, if we win.

Otherwise, excessive, undisciplined penalties gives the opponent unearned opportunities.

4:49 PM
Blogger BlandaRocked said...

Calico, INTs generally come because of a lack of communication between the QB and the receiver. How can injuries NOT be partly responsible for the INTs when your dealing with a new QB and WRs who haven't played in over a year. You're being very short on cause and effect. I'll avoid the offensive word, "low."

As for the penalties, you have to identify what penalties you're talking about. If you're talking about holding, personal fouls, etc., then no - unless the guy who made the penalty is himself a replacement. But when you're talking about false starts - those generally are caused by anticipation (trying to get a jump on the defensive player). That is greatly effected by the ball carrier and the QB. When I played center in high school, I know that's what caused me to do it.

I'm not sure why you should consider that logic "low," but so be it.

Was this also your conclusion after the three game win streak?

I admit the playoffs look dismal, but all we have to do is win 1 of three for 8-8... which "doesn't suck."

Sucking is 4-12, which is what we used to do regularly.

8:36 PM

8-8 sucks! That means we finish 1-2.

9-7 isn't much better, but if that record gets us to the playoffs, so be it.

10-6 is respectable, playoffs or no playoffs.

I sincerely hope that the team's lack of effort doesn't sink us. There's time to right the ship.

What I realize- this is still AD's team. He ran the D, the draft was his also. Hue is a rookie and there is no GM. We need a D coordinator who is not a yes man. Draft picks based on a plan not just speed and physical prowess, (Bruce Campbell)

Mike Tomlin was a rookie coach that won a super bowl because there was a plan in place. If we get Reggie McKenzie to plan and evaluate personnel, a D coordinator and two or three good drafts...
Palmer might be ok for next year but a franchise qb is needed past that.
Bottom line is this - I want the other teams and their fans to go down the schedule in the beginning of the year and say, "we have to play the steelers, the packets, the ravens, the pats AND The Raiders, we're fucd!

News report:

With the Raiders currently leading the league in both penalties and yards, Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer says Jackson made a point in practice this week of chewing players out for stupid mistakes.
“Coach was on our a–,” Palmer told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com. “It was an intense week. We got back to some of the small things that I think got overlooked when we were on a little bit of a [winning] streak. It was back to fundamentals.”

Jackson has it all wrong. He should be blaming injuries and officials and Raiders blogs for the team's recent plight instead of lack of effort and fundamentals, right?

UNK coach Darrell Morris said the two-time, first-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection looks like an NFL player. The two-year starter had 155 career tackles with a school-record 23-1/2 sacks for the Lopers.

“He’s got the body, the long arms and all that kind of stuff,” Morris said. “He’s very athletic, he runs very well, he’s big and strong and a hard worker.”

Now this "UDFA" Rookie has taken "CJ"s place on the roster..."CJ" is done for the season due to the deaths in his family after playing only 4 games this season...Hopefully this new kid will bring a spark with him and ignite something on that football field...

The definition of "Out of Gas"!!!

In each of the last two road games, the Raiders trailed 34-0 before scoring en route to one-sided losses and looked like a team running on empty.

Jackson, however described this week's mood and energy as "awesome -- probably different than it's been the last four or five weeks.''

That the reality NOT the excuse!!!

"So forgive me for considering that character, dedication and teamwork might be at the heart of the matter,"

Get your head out of your asses and stop making yourselves out to be such ignorant damn fools!!!

Your pimping that puke "Orange" again just like last time when you said McDaniels was going to dominate the AFCW along with Polio-n-Haily in "KC"!!!..You were right again on that one Huh!!

So lets take a look at their lack of "character, dedication and teamwork" that has taken them down along with "SD" and many others...

Your 2-n-4 "Donkey" were without "character, dedication and teamwork"...Ya that's why we struggled to beat them by 3 freaking points the 1st week of the season...

"KC" has fallen off the edge of the cliff due to the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork" as did "SD" but now have become Inspired to play with heart again???

Bull Fuckin Shit!!!

It's about time you came to grips with what the game of football is...A "Team Sport" where the laps of 1 or 2 players can derail an entire scheme...That laps can come via any # of things...Injury/attitude/family death/coaching/"Mediot" pressure/"Zebra"/trash talkin in the game or whatever....Untie your shoe laces says Suh!!...LoL!!

Both
SD" -n- "KC" have had their seasons derailed due to injury...NOT the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork"...

The bills were on top of the world but a few injuries have sent them to the abyss NOT the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork"...

Now I suppose you are saying it was the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork" that sent the Jets into a tail spin a few weeks ago as they lost to that "Donkey" and others...Same goes for the Cowboys and others....How pathetically stupid!!

The loss or addition of a few key players can make or break a system...The teams that can continue to play threw such adversities and keep on winning are the exceptions and should be praised...NOT the norm!!

"GB" last season who barely made the "PO" cut but kicked everyone's ass once they got in....No doubt suffering from the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork" most of the regular season as they lost!!!...LoL!!

Houston this season who despite key injuries have had enough to continue winning...Remarkable on their part no doubt and great coaching too I might add!!...

So if "Big Ben" can't go this week Pitts will fail due to the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork" and NOT anything to do with Injury!!!...Unbelievably fuckin stupid!!!

The more you pimp this crap the dumber you appear...It's you won damn weak assed failed personality perceptions that are taking you down due to the lack of "character, dedication and teamwork"....

Games need to be evaluated on the basis of that week...But I guess that just goes way over someone's head???

When a play broke down were players still giving it their all in pursuit??...Or did they just hang their heads and watch someone score??...

Was Moss in there running a lazy rout while not even looking for the damn ball???

Did this team continue to fight for points even when the game was way out of control without hope of a "V"???

Did the 1st string continue to play or did they get relieved by the back-ups???

I think anyone who watched the last two games would agree that the Raiders displayed a lack of effort and heart.

The alternate explanation is that we were outplayed by far superior Dolphins and Packers teams (Packers, maybe).

There's a quick way to resolve this dispute, i.e., the Raiders dropping the Lions like a bad habit.

Raider Nation could sure use a pick-me-up.

I assert that it isn't the lack of effort or desire that is making the defense crash and burn... its exactly the opposite.

You don't have people jump out of assignment because they are loafing.. they are doing it trying to make something happen.

If McClain was loafing on the that first TD against GB fer instance, the RB would have ran right into him for a three yard gain.

I don't see at all that this team has given up like I did a few years back at the end of the season with Art Shell as coach.

Not sure which games you guys are watching (if you even watch them at all.)

Maybe you should check out all the injuries GB had when they won the SB last yr. Excuses are for LOSERS, a team that gets blown out 2 weeks in a row, in the fashion the Raiders did.....something isn't right and injuries are the excuse. Raiders didn't show up with the playoffs on the line. This is when champions always show up. The Raiders HAVE TO SHOW UP today or it is GAME OVER.

How bout fighters who break a hand, or get a nasty cut, or sustain an injury during a fight. The champion continues to fight to win, the nonchamp finds a way out and uses it as an excuse.

It's not like I'm going out on a limb here. It's straight from the source.

If players are missing assignments and getting blown up on Sunday (regardless of how much energy the expend doing it), that would be a fairly logical result of complacency and lack of effort in preparing for games.

Looks like the 4th Qtr meltdown is haunting the Raiders again (as seen from the Lions game from yesterday).

Overall, based on the current losing streak, the Raiders seem to have lost the kind of focus they showed earlier in the season. The only reason why the Raiders have not yet been eliminated from the playoff hopes is because the rest of our division has been weak, although the Broncos and the Chiefs seem to be stepping up lately and things are not going to get any easier for the Raiders from now on.
