Are You Feeling Minty Fresh?

I am.

Here we are on the eve of our first contest heading into the 2012 season. I have faith in our team's leadership, but still don't know what to expect from the team itself. It certainly feels different. It certainly feels minty fresh.

Now it's up to the Michael Huffs of the world to pipe down and step up and jam a can full of Altoids down the eager throat of the Raider Nation.

It's also time for the denizens of Raider Take to turn the corner as well. Here's the new (ie: original) mantra for all of us here for the duration of the season:
  • Football takes, please
  • Check the personal stuff at the door
  • It's okay to criticize the Raiders, always has been, always will be
  • It's okay to prop the Raiders, always has been, always will be
  • All opinions aren't equal; if you express an opinion that isn't grounded in logic or observable fact, you can expect to hear about it; don't take it personally, just step up your game
  • Before commenting, ask yourself: would I say this to someone's face in public? If not, that's a red flag.
Too often, in the comments section, we are talking about each other, creating an endless and tiresome loop of meaningless "gotcha" games.

It's a new era. Embrace it and enjoy it. This should be fun. If you're not having fun here, that's okay. It's not for everyone. If you're miserable here, seek fun elsewhere. Life is too short.

Remember when you watched football as a kid? If you've lost that feeling, try to find it again. I'm speaking to myself as much as I'm speaking to you.

A lot of cool things start with the letter "F": fall, football, fun, family, friendship, fairness, faith, fidelity, forgiveness...If you want to drop F-bombs, try one of those.

Are you feeling minty fresh?

Is my math right; Dennis Allen will be the Raiders' fourth consecutive HC to make his NFL head coaching debut?

I have a good feeling about Allen's chances to surpass his predecessors. One reason is that no recent Raiders’ HC before Allen has had Allen’s authority, autonomy, nor resources. IMO, that places Allen at a notable advantage.

For a young man taking on his 1st head coaching job, Allen has very quickly settled in, sold his vision, and stamped his leadership.

You can't fool the players -- you either command respect and buy in or you are deemed over your head.

When guys like Seymour sing Allen's praise and voice the "it" quality Allen possesses, it bodes well for a bright future.

The best thing about the new era is the partnership between McKenzie and Allen.

The new look Raiders are FINALLY here. Years and years of waiting for a new direction....and the new direction is so positive, so on the mark.

Exactly what I have been waiting for, a hungry HC with a good staff, a GM that is making very strong moves that all seem to be on the mark.

A Defense that will not look anything like the Defense of the past 50 years, thank goodness. Listening to the Defensive players saying the same things I have said for years on here about the old system....then their total endorsement of their new system and their total glee when they discuss it = it warms my heart.

We have a QB that can be a top QB in the League, a RB that can be a top 5, an O-line that looks to have gotten better than a decent O-line from last year. Wr's who are young and seem to be a very talented group.

Best kickers in the game...how in the world could anyone NOT pick the Raiders to win the West?

How are the Offense's the Raiders face going to plan for a Defense they have never seen in this 1st part of the season = advantage Raiders.

The Raiders are going to be highly motivated, the coaching is going to be crisp and very detailed. The whole Org is going to be on the same page and highly functional......nothing but good news for the Nation...GO RAIDERS.

I'm amped up for the season, and have been for awhile. I've been watching as much film as there has been available this offseason, and I like the vibe coming out of the Raiders' camp.
I want the Raiders to succeed. It has been a long time coming for so much expectation coming into a season for the Raiders, and I'm excited!
Here is what I want to see tonight, smash mouth defense, and a sharp playing offense. I don't want a ton of penalties, I want to see the Raiders not only control the tempo of this game, but to dominate!
JUST WIN, BABY!

In the overall picture, Pryor ranks about a 3 out of a 100. This will be a steady methodical Offense during the Regular season, it won't be a freak show of putting in a 3rd string QB who can run a Wildcat, ala Timmy Tebought.

Bigger picture is the Defense, will McFadden reach his potential, will PALMER reach elite status, will these new WR's deliver at game time....Will Allen and Co. make the right calls at the right time....these are the real questions, the Pryor thing is for fans who follow Timmy Tebought's every move and hang on every word a media type may utter. More like an awestruck kid who is still learning the ropes. That stuff is for kids, if the shoe fits?

I agree, Jones. Based on media reports from camp and coaches interviews, it seems Pryor is not even a close third in the hierarchy of Raider QBs. The hype surrounding his play tonight is just that.

While I'm excited to see him actually play, I'm already giving him a pass for any mistakes he might make. The kid is at best a project.

The real story is as you mentioned above. These are the tangibles that will make or break our 2012 season.

Pryor is a long-term project who has a steep hill to climb to becoming a proficient, polished, NFL ready QB.

I like Pryor who seems to be dedicated to his craft. He has wonderful athletic skills.

I would say conservatively that Pryro is at least 2 or 3 seasons away minimum from becoming a potential #2 QB.

It's a QB driven league. Palmer is as good as we've had for 10 years, but depth is still a concern.

Tough game tonight. Run D look solid in first half but, overall, a sloppy game by the Raiders... who let a Rob Ryan-coached defense shut them out.

Hopefully, no injuries and we can regroup next week.

Not exactly electrifying, but not terribly significant, either. Leinart looked pretty solid in Knapp's offense. But is Knapp's offensive approach ultimately any good with this roster? We shall see.

Anonymous JONES said...

1st game....vanilla Offense...Palmer looked decent, Ford sure sold him out. If Ford continues with that kind of effort, he may not make the team. Anyone notice him running at half speed unwilling to tackle the guy who just picked off the pass that he did not try hard for? That was not what Allen wants to see, maybe he doesn't know the scholarship thing is done.

McFadden looked just like he did last year in his few plays. Starting O-line was looking good....WR's looks to be a weak spot without Moore and Ford looking like a College boy. Streater is a keeper, Criner might have a head problem? Starting Defense looked alright, Bartell needs work = reps. McClain is going to have a good year as is the front 4-6 (subs). From the look on Allen's face in the 2nd half....looks like he knows there is a lot of work to do. I would bet that Allen is going to pull an all nighter on film, his night isn't over, he will be up all morning, you could almost see disappointment in his eyes, IMO. He will do everything he can to fix it.....that's the type of coaching that is needed in the NFL. Friday will be a good measuring stick to where this team is at.

Palmer has got to quit throwing into double coverage. The one knock against him in this league has been lack of check downs; and he showed it again. Good thing this was a pre-season scrimmage.

We had ample opportunity on both sides of the ball to do something. Don't know why Jano missed a 47 yarder, but hopefully he gets it out of his system before the season opener.

Did the defense look pretty solid, or did the Cowboys offense look pretty horrible? Trying to force things offensively is what caused us this game. Out of the 3 QB's, Leinart looked sharp, and played like he could wind up being our starter. Our line struggled with a lefty Q though, hope we correct that in the rest of the pre-season.

There are some concerns, but the main concern offensively is to quit forcing plays that are not there! I am however, still feeling minty fresh because it was the first pre-season game. If this were the last pre-season game, I'd be a little more concerned.

JUST WIN, BABY!

I look forward to smart, tough, disciplined play, for starters, so we can beat the Bolts on the 10th of Sept in OakTown. That is Priority ONE. Miami looks tough too, will be a trying 4-game ride before the week five bye, let's hope McFadden stays healthy! Hosting Pittsburgh and going to DonksVille would be a nice 2-win streak, so a 3-1 setting, at worst is my minimum bar for this squad.

It was nice just to see Gruden there, after being banned by Al Davis once he went to work for ESPN.

I was hoping for Benson too, but Joseph Addai was released by New England, he's available. Kevin Faulk, Earnest Graham, and Ryan Gant are still available. Also worth mentioning are Maurice and Sammy Morris, Jerious Norwood, Chester Taylor, Derrick Ward, Ryan Torain, and Cadillac Williams.

All that to say that there are still options at RB. I'd like to see Gant, Torain, and/or Ward as short yardage situations (in that order). Ward has fumble issues, Gant and Torain have injury issues. Just my 2 cents.

With news of stadium talk, I think the Raiders stay in Oakland, creating a venue similar to the one being presented in Los Angeles (Stadium, shopping, hotel complex). It wouldn't surprise me if they try to lure the AEG group into building their stadium in Oakland, and sharing revenue of it with Oakland/Alameda.

I've attached a website with pictures of it; since both their plans and the lone billionaire's plans were turned down by LA.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/proposed-new-la-stadium-is-translucent-and-whimsical?urn=nfl,wp11926

It wouldn't surprise me, because the Raiders have been involved in the talks concerning this stadium proposal (specifically) for over a year. With the A's and Warriors leaving the Bay Area, and Oakland/Alameda County losing some revenue; this may be one of the best options for both the Raiders and Oakland/Alameda.

Along with the shopping area and hotels, the Raiders could also request a training facility/field as well as an area for Raider Nation celebrations. I would also build a Raiders' History museum/Hall of Fame.

I think this is going to be a huge deal for the Raiders and Oakland/Alameda if they can package it right (and that is dependent on Oakland/Alameda politicians more than anyone else). I'd call the whole complex "Raider Nation". That's my 2 cents on the stadium issue.

Raiders should have faired much better in the 1st half, Arizona came in fired up and the Raiders weren't ready for it. This game was a good wake up call to the team, it was like a regular game as far as intensity...Palmer better stop doing those picks, they are killers. Goodson...YIKES, he cannot be the backup to McFadden, upgrade needed there. McFadden looks all world. DHB still can't catch in tight coverage, WR is a trouble spot, again. Good to see Bergstrom leading the way on the Raiders 1st TD of the year, even though it's preseason.

I like the look of the Offense when Knapp opened it up after the Cards had scored their 1st 7. Remember, they are intentionally holding back on the plays, keeping it simple, on that drive, we got a glimpse of what it can be.

Defense.....some still to iron out, but liking the looks of it as well. Chekwa needs to be the #3 Corner, Van Dyke might not make the team. Burris needs seasoning

Special Teams, aren't looking so special, lots of work needed there.

I see good things, needs some cleaning up and a couple more signings by Reggie of castoffs at cut time, at RB and WR maybe LB too. They have the makings to be a good team, Allen just needs to bring it together.

The Raiders have a ways to go to smooth out the kinks.

Goodson looks terrible. Miller looks far better, but did make at least one really obvious mistake running wide of a good inside block.

Unless we sign a vet RB, it should be Miller over Goodson to make the roster.

Steater should be an opening day starter... which means the Raiders probably should sign a vet WR too.

Either DHB wasn't getting open, or Palmer has no faith in him. Either way, Streater was the only WR on the field early on.

Criner made an incredible adjustment to catch a duck thrown by Leinart. That's a catch the Raiders most venerable WR still can't make.

Special teams was a bust. This unit already needs an overhaul.

Did I say Goodson looks awful? Yikes! Hard to believe Cedric Benson was on the market for so long. There are still other options out there.

Tiawan Jones is beginning his career in Chaz Schilens fashion... injured all the time. Raiders need a legit backup for McF

On a side note, and with all due respect, the broadcast team of Flores, Plunkett and Papa seem lost at times, and they regularly give misinformation in their commentary.

It's preseason, the Offense looked good until Goodson came in. Arizona came ready to play and their starting Defense could be one of the best in the league. Palmer threw a bad pick, but up to that point, the Offense was moving the ball, after the original 3 and out on 3 basic runs. Palmer will need to iron out the bad decisions. With McFadden in there, the Offense looked explosive when Knapp opened it up. The Offense will be just fine. The Defense looks good to go, the Special Teams need most of the work IMO. Game 3 of the preseason is when it shows the closest to what the Raiders will be on Opening Day. Also, the team was playing with 3 days off from their previous start....no need to panic at this point.

@ JONES... thanks for your analysis, I was honestly thinking about the infamous clown car being rolled out of storage until I read your post... We got stomped... they embarrassed our O, SpT, and D all in under 11 mins. But like you said there were some good things later. DMC looks like he belongs on a way better team, Goodson looks like a child compared to Bush (with whom we'da scored at least twice), Palmer talks like he's on top of it and plays like he can't remember it; and with his size why can't DHB make the grabs? Prior belongs in school, as for the D, you can't have even one gaping hole 'cos they'll run thru it... we still seem to have trouble getting 3 n out.
I know it's pre season and all, but I really hope that they're holding back something because the game was a true reality check on expectations... we have to gel and improve 1000% or SD will spank us opening night!

3:55 PM
Anonymous JONES said...

Baz, I don't agree with being stomped. Palmer's pic setup a TD at the 3yrd line, the blocked punt on the rookie gave them another TD. A poor coverage on another punt set them up for a short field on their 1st drive for TD, when the Defense, as Allen said, wasn't ready to go.

After their 1st score, the team responded well, other than Palmer's pic and erratic special teams play.

The Special teams play can be taken care of, that kid can punt, but he is a rook who takes his time to get it off. The kid wanted to show his leg, more than he wanted to help the team win. Lechler in there will soildify that. Plus, the blocking assignments will be more solid in season play.

The team had 3 days in between games, Allen said there was no game planning done and the play calling was held back. I think Knapp opened it up a bit on the 2nd drive of the game for the Raiders. I say the Offense looked really good on that drive, Palmer looks good with McFadden in there. Once Goodson came in, it was fumble city which set them up again....these things can be cleaned up and they will. It's the 2nd game of the preseason, no clown cars yet. Take a deep breath, it's cool.

Remember when Art was coach last time? Didn't the Raiders go undefeated that year in preseason 5-0? Just sayin.

Palmer is someone who walked away from a playoff team.

In his last season with Bengals, he threw 20 picks.

Palmer threw 16 picks in less then half a season with Raiders.

Palmer has started the pre season by....throwing more picks.

So I think it is fair to question where Palmers head is at.

To question his desire to play football at a high level anymore.

Palmer has walked out on his old team, and seems very unfocused with his new team.

I ask these question not to dump on Palmer, but because of what happened last year.

The Raiders were looking like a playoff team until Campbell went down.

Without Campbell, the Raiders were ill prepared at the QB position.

If Palmer gets hurt, or is ineffective, the Raiders have only Lienart, and Pryor to turn to.

So we have to wonder, are the Raiders any better off at the QB position this year ?

Palmer has played 3 quarters in a new offense, 1 of those qrtrs was with a fumble machine (Goodson). In another, he had 2 TD passes dropped, excellent throws. Jacoby dropped them last game and DHB this game. His intercept last game could have been avoided if Ford had his head in the game. Let me guess, you are a 'stats guy'? How long before you are asking for Allen's head? If they don't win next week?

Moore is the only injury that is a concern, Curry would be a nice addition if he can play. Myers coming back will put a TE out there with better hands.

Definitely need another RB, JONES ain't the answer there. If Curry can't come back, another LB is needed too.

Moore and Streater should be the starting WR's at this point, all things being equal. Myers TE, Ford or DHB #3.

Bergstrom is making noise at LG. Getting Wiz back at C would be a big plus too.

Defense is pretty much set with no real weakness with the starters. Get the O straightened out, get the Special teams tightened up...good to go.

How did your Broncos and Chargers do tonight? Manning, Rivers 2 pics each...the sky is falling...the West is going to be a shootout and the Raiders are going to be right there...should be a good time this year.

A few minor injuries 2 weeks into preseason isn't the worst thing in the world. The only injury that concerned me was Curry and he seems to be ok.

What is important is the work the Raiders will do on the pracice field between now and the opener.

I expect the Raiders to tighten things up. I'm looking forward to the regular season. Personally, I don't get to vested in preseason results.

Rookie management, rookie coaching staff, few draft picks (and only mid-late rounds) and limited resources for free agency.

Yet, in a window of at least the last 10 years, the Raiders have never been in better hands.

To follow some of the discussion above, I see Ford as a good option for slot receiver, along with Moore and Streater as starters, i.e., assuming Allen starts his best WRs.

The Raiders are going to be okay. Our offense is going to get the job done, and our defense is going to be better than last year, just because penalties (on both sides of the ball) will decrease for the first time in a long time; so we won't be shooting ourselves in the foot.

I will go as far to say that we more than likely are not going to get blown out the way we were last year in the last 5 games of the season (Week 13 on). We won only 1 of those games (Chiefs), and lost 1 of those games where we had a 4th Quarter lead (Lions). The other 3 losses in that 5 game span were blowout losses against the Dolphins, Packers, and Chargers.

I say we will be okay this year. If we go into the last 5 games with a 7-4 record, with a good lineup (like we did last season); I will bet money we won't end the season 8-8!

I wonder if Nnamdi wishes he had stayed in Oakland after last night's embarrassing implosion by the Eagles' defense?

Andy Reid has no control over that team; and he has overstayed as HC for 4+ years. Time for the Eagles to turn the page and move on. It appears there is going to be a mutiny.

Hey Nnamdi, you're always welcomed back in Oakland!

I still think we need a good vet back up. I listed a few that I am surprised are still Free Agents. My 2 options would be Gant or Torain. Torain is a work horse, and a grinder. The problem is, so is Goodson. Before his injury, he was tearing it up. I think this last week's game, he was still tenative after receiving a freaking neck injury. That's scary stuff.

I wouldn't count on Curry right now; and there is not a lot of LB's out there right now. Burris looks okay, but we still need someone with experience there. Merriman is available, but I don't think he has "it" anymore. Isaiah Ekejiubah is also available; and he might be a good back up to Burris, and someone who can teach him as well. Plus, he is an amazing Special Teams guy. Carl Ihenacho on the Strongside is going to be an amazing player, he's been blowing up in the preseason so far. Can't wait to see how he is going to pan out. He might be the underrated pick up of the offseason.

I also think Bergstrom has looked better than Carlisle, and Streater has looked better than Ford. Can't wait to see how Denarius is looking, and glad to have Tawain Jones back. Hopefully, they will get some action soon.

"It's been great." Said Carson Palmer. "It gives you a chance to get a feel for just how organized everything's going to be for the in-season stuff. I've never done it this way before, having a full-on game plan week for a game. But it just gives you a chance to get your mind and really your body prepared for what the in-season schedule's going to be once the actual season hits. So it's really cool to get a feel for when meetings are going to be, how practice is going to be, what time in your day's going to be to get your workout in, stretch, whatever it may be. So it's just a good chance for everybody get kind of acclimated with the way the schedule's going to be in the regular season."

I'm focused on the following in no particular order;

- how our CBs hold up in pass coverage
- watching LB Burris' game readiness to potentially start on day 1
- our pass rush/presure and blitzing
- improvements in the ST play
- our rookie WRs abilities to perform with the depth chart up for grabs
- run efficiency (offensively) and run D fits
- overall execution by individuals and units

Every fan wants to see improvement from Carson Palmer, and this will be a test to see if the Raiders actually have a backup for McFadden. I think they made a mistake trading for Goodson, and I don't think Jones is durable enough.

On the other side of the ball, it's dissappointing that Curry isn't healthy. He's losing valuable reps in practices and games.

After spending several years with the Raiders at the bottom of the league, I see the Lions as a more developed team right now. I'm looking for the Raiders to disprove that notion. However, it is preseason and the Raiders probably should stay vanilla, despite the reports Allen is "game planning."

"I thought we had a chance to get better," Allen said. "Our guys worked extremely hard. We still have a long way to go and a lot of things we need to improve on, but I thought it was a good foundation to build on."
----------------------------------

Here’s what I feel this game needs to show me:

1st and foremost that Allan/Tarver are able to come in with a Scheme/Gameplan that puts our “D” in a position to make plays against that Lyons “O”…That this week they show the ability to gameplan for a team and have our players ready to play in it…Allan coached against that Lyon last season as “DC” in the “MuleValley” so has some familiarity…But if the plan is bad the players will appear bad as well!!!

2nd I want to see by the 2nd quarter that some adjustments are being made to slow down the areas where that Lyon is making gains against us…Here again unless the proper actions are being taken by these coaches our players will not be allowed to shine…

Than on the “O” the same things apply to Knapp!!!…This is the Biggie!!!

Can Knapp come into this game with a gameplan to take advantage of that Lyon “D” and have his players prepared to play within it???…These players don’t decide this for themselves and are limited by the designs they play under…So now the bulk of this is where it should be…Right on Knapp’s shoulders…

Next can Knapp make adjustments to that gameplan as the game wears on taking advantage of what their “D” gives him???…In the past this is where Knapp has failed so miserably in my opinion and just fallen back on what he trusts most…Run-Run-run!!!

I don't want to see McClain covering Calvin Johnson. I want to see improvement from Palmer in his ability to control the ball, and make better decisions.
I also want to see what the backup RBs can do without McFadden. If we end up lame with them in the lineup, then we need to bring in a vet like Gant or Torain.

I want to see McClain planting the QB on his ass, while someone else is covering Johnson. I want to see Knapp open it up (somewhat)and give Palmer confidence heading into the season. I want to see the TE being used in passing situations. I want another RB and I'm sure Reggie will pick up a late cut to fill that spot.

I want the Defense to continue their improvement and not show anything to complicated (save it for the season). I want to see Bartell make a couple of plays so his confidence will be there Game 1. I think Reggie will pick up a late cut LB as well, Curry ain't going to make it. I sthat enough I's yet?

“DA”/Tarver made those adjustments to what was working for the Lyons….They started containing their running “QB” so he could no longer do damage…

Knapp had his team prepared to play against the Lyons “D” and he took advantage of what they gave him…

The “OL” has some breakdowns in protection but also opened some good running lanes for “D-Mac” and “TJ”….Outside was always open…"QB"s had time in the pocket to go threw their progressions…

These “D” coaches are doing a fine job as well as the “O” coaches who are bringing along Pryor….

Than considering that this game was without a few key players and should be even better:

In the trenches no Seymour or Wiz @ "DT"/"C"...

@ "LB" no Curry..

@ "WR" no Moore -n- Ford...

This is our guy and this was his half to show us he's all over it and in control... I didn't get that feeling.

There were many bright spots and a few clangers everywhere else in the team's performance... but suddenly the biggest question is not will Pryor improve but will Palmer. The Chargers have been notoriously slow starters under Norv Turner, but that’s no reason to rush Mathews back before he’s fully ready. Even without Mathews, they can get by the Raiders and a Tennessee Titans team that will have Jake Locker making his first NFL start.

If Pryor plays Thursday the way he played against the Lions, fans might become a little uneasy if Palmer gets off to a slow start.

That said, he's not even close to being NFL ready, per coaches, observers, media and common sense. As DA stated, the best he can do is continue to improve.

Short term (this year), I think Pryor can do for the Raiders anything that Tebow can do for the Jets, and with greater natural ability. Not sure either one ever becomes a starting NFL QB, though... unless of course the Raiders plan to implement the option play as part of their regular offense.

As I stated before. Terelle Pryor will be starting QB by mid season.

Pryor is a hard worker, who will continue to get better.

People that are saying Pryor is "years away", are totally misreading the situation.

Pryor is a double threat, who can pass, and run.
Once he learns this new offense, there will be no stopping him.

Meanwhile, Palmer looks like he is sleepwalking through the games.

Matt Lienart ? A solid backup, but his candy arm keeps him from starting.

Terelle Pryor, the final gift from Al Davis.

Thank you Al.

To me, it would be remarkable if Pryor becomes a reliable #2 QB by 2013.

He showed off his considerable athletic abilities and good progress in 1/2 of an exhibition game vs. #2s. It is a start but I would read too much into it in terms of being NFL ready yet.

The key is for Pryor to keep grinding, learning, and taking consistent steps forward in his craft.

It is far premature to consider opening up the final gift from Al Davis.

00...dare to put a wager on that? Maybe it is you who is "misreading the situation"? Palmer is sleepwalking? Raiders were close to DBL the possession time after the 1st half as they were in Arizona. Some observations and concerns heading into the season, and hopefully, against the Seahags we will see some improvement:

Carson has to quit throwing interceptions. I don't get why more QBs don't learn from Gannon (look other wr-look other wr-look and hit the hot route).

Defenses today follow the QBs eyes, and that is what made Gannon excel at knowing the playbook. He knew and trusted his WRs to be where they were supposed to, and did not need to rely on his eyes to tell him where the WRs would be. Palmer, Pryor, and Leinart need to learn this trait from Gannon (now that he's welcomed back to Oaktown).

Backup RB. We need someone to step up and run the ball when McFadden is not in the lineup. This is where I wanted Benson, but he wanted too much, and wanted a lot of touches; which is why he went to GB (and a shot at a ring). Can't say that I blame him there. But Joseph Addai was released by the Pats. I know he hasn't been healthy, but he would be an awesome back up. Ryan Gant is still listed as a UFA on nfl.com, Jerious Norwood, Chester Taylor, Ryan Torain, and Derrick Ward are all still available as well that would make decent backups.

Other names that may not be bad to look at: Bo Scaife was released by New England as TE. Bryant McFadden was released by Pittsburgh.

I think the only reason why we real in Roscoe Parish was to get an inside scoop at what the Dunder Dolts are going to do.

Keep an eye out on the waivers for a OLB (I think it would be cool to give Merriman a try). I don't think Curry makes the final 53, but will be put on IR soon. I will be interested to see if we give TO or Chad Johnson a look. That would be awesome to pick either one up at Vet minimum.

Overall, I'm still excited for this season. It is ours for the taking. JUST WIN, BABY!

Nate...kind of hard for Palmer to gain that trust when the WR's are never in the lineup. The only one Palmer trusts at this point seems to be Streater. Just say no to Ocho and TO, they are done and out of the picture. Merriman is toast to. There will be some talent available after the final cuts.

I agree with another RB, Goodson isn't good enough, Jones is just a kid who should not be depended on as the #2 back.

We need "TE" help and he was a target last season...

I don't think "RB" is much of an issue at this point..."CB" prolley is???..."LB" could be as well??...

But the "OL" is way too thin @ "C" and our new "RG" is getting blown up!!!..."RT"???....Unless one of the young players can step up we need attention on that unit!!!

For the record:

1. The Raider's final regular season record
2. Offensive prediction
3. Defensive prediction
4. Grab your balls prediction

My Reply:

I Reserve The Right To Be Slightly Hopeful If Not All In Yet!!!

10-6 as always…That’s the minimum to be AFCW Champs or win a “Wild Card”….Allot of hope in that one!!!

“CP3” top 10 “QB”…“D-Mac” top 5 “RB”….Knapp gets a pat on the back for NOT collapsing??…Well if this goes to shit than an Al Saunders take over at the Bye!!!

Top 10 “D”….# 1 Sacks…Slightly vulnerable threw the air but strong against the run!!!

Terrelle Pryor will emerge as the greatest “Slash” the NFL has ever seen!!!

Nate - easier said than done. Gannon had Tim Brown and Jerry Rice to throw to.

Also, I'd prefer to stay away from the older RBs...

IMO, L Miller is the better choice over Goodson, and perhaps could fill the void for short yardage, which Allen thinks McF is best suited.

NYRaider, it is easier said than done, but it is still doable; regardless of who is WR.

PR, here are my predictions:
1. 11-5
2. Offensive prediction: ranked #13 overall, #1 rushing, #16 in passing.
3. Defensive prediction: ranked #9 overall, #12 rushing, #1 passing.
4. Raiders make AFC Championship or Super Bowl; McFadden League MVP.

**********************************

Vince Young never established himself as an above average passer.
Plus, he suffered from bouts of depression.

Terelle Pryor has a warrior mentality. When he loses, he doesn't get sad, he gets mad. I like that.

Look, I'm not saying when Pryor finally gets on the field in games that count, he will be an instant star.

No. He will have struggles. Make mistakes. Have growing pains.

But there will also be great passes, runs, and leadership mixed in.

This "years away" thinking is old.

Things move very quickly in the NFL these days.

Reggie, and DA are not wedded to Palmer. They are not the ones that went out and gave up a #1,and a #2 to get him. And they never would have.

I believe at some point this season, Reg, and DA are going to realize the future is now.

They are going to look down that bench and see Leinart and Pryor.

If they want a bandaid, they will play Leinart.

If they want the future, it will be Pryor.

Who would you choose ??

I am 100% in favor of playing the best players. If those players turn out to be draft picks, free agents or fringe players, so be it. It's ALL about winning.

That said, I trust Dennis Allen's assessment of Pryor, that he is not ready and merely a work in progress. Meanwhile, Palmer is as close to an elite QB as the Raiders have had since Gannon won League MVP in 2002.

It's not fair to gauge Palmer on limited play in a few preseason games. He's a pro. Palmer may surprise a few people this year.

3:15 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

Agree NYR about Palmer.

I think many Raider fans are judging Palmer too harshly, without perspective for a handful of errors in preseaon games.

No question Palmer needs to cut down on his # of INTs due to poor decisions. He needs to be more aware of how detrimental it is to turn the ball over.

I also think that Palmer will eventually benefit from having 6 WRs (once alll healthy) who can all do damage (Moore, Ford, DHB, Criner, Streater, Parrish)

7:17 PM
Blogger PantyRaider said...

Sorta doubt Parrish sees much time at "WR" unless we have "Injury Bug" Fly Byes??...He's only been a 35/400yd receiver at best...Most likely just a "PR"/"KR" and we keep 7 "WR"s...

Eddie McGee continues to be listed @ #2 on our Depth Chart behind "DHB" so obviously they want him to step up...Criner is #3...

Than there's also Reece/"D-Mac" who line up outside as well so if this team can stay healthy there are already plenty of weapons in the passing game...

"TE" appears to be the weakest link???

Although Parrish's primary responsibilites will be punt returner, he is a very capable slot WR. It doesn't hurt (no pun intended) to have more depth at this position when you consider that Moore, Ford, and DHB have been dinged up this preseason and our other 2 WRs are rookies. Keep in mind that Parrish has more NFL game expereince than almost our entire WRs have combined. I wouldn't discount the added benefit of having a veteran presence for our young WRs to learn a thing or 2 from him.

True - Parrish still needs to prove himself and make the 53 man final roster.

My point was that there is potentially real value in signing him as far as a low cost player who can be our primary return man, provide veteran expereince and knowledge, and depth.

Criner - 0 NFL games
Streater - 0 NFL games
Moore - 13 games / 33 receptions
Ford - 24 games / 44 receptions
DHB - 41 games / 99 receptions
Parrish - 77 games / 134 receptions

This game doesn't mean anything, but it's discouraging to see the Raiders get completely handled by the Seahawks. If the success of our run defense hinges on a couple players that didn't play tonight, we are in big trouble.

And Matt Leinart is absolutely awful.

I liked Allen's reaction to tonite though, setting the bar high.

Jones, it was a complete domination from start to finish, and the Raiders played plenty of players that they will count on during the season. They were handled by the Seahawks 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Not exactly a feel-good game to prime for the season opener.

If the team comes out and gets dominated in the Reg season like that, ok, there are problems. It's preseason, the 4th game which is always garbage time. The 3rd game is the closest to a real game and they looked fine. Obviously, it was pure vanilla in the play calling and Seattle knew it. It is what it is, doesn't mean a damn thing.

The season clock doesn't start until 9/10. I get it. But it wasn’t fun to watch.

Based on this vanilla meaningless game, the Seahawks demonstrated far better depth, and they appear more adept at some of the things that separate good teams from avg teams, e.g., forcing turnovers, and little things like hurrying to the LOS when call on the field benefits them on a challengeable play.

Mitchell had an easy INT-turned-PI when he played the WR instead of playing the ball in zone coverage. Maybe that's a carryover from playing all M2M up to this point in his career.

Eh! Whatever. Let the real games begin!

10:33 AM
Anonymous JONES said...

Mitchell...he makes a couple of plays, then he dummies up on a couple of plays. To busy trying to lay the wood instead of making a football play (pick). Carry over from the past, a player who is a good athlete, can make some good plays, but lacks the 'football intelligence'. A 2nd rd pick that will be a career backup.

I saw some young talent trying to find their way, against a little more experienced 2nd/3rd stringers. Once the Reg season starts, those guys won't be on the field, other than some special team play. Special teams (returns) is the big worry IMO. Return turnovers kill a team, that needs to get straightened out ASAP.

Also....all the years I have been watching football, there are a maybe a handful of preseason games that would be catergorized as "fun to watch". Years ago, they wouldn't even televise the preseason and it was 6 games long and not even worth watching. Last night, listening to the Seattle crowd go nuts over a game 4 preseason game...just a little over the top IMO.

They think they are going to win the SB in Seattle because they crushed some teams in preseason. They are going to have a QB controversy in just a few weeks, this preseason will be quickly forgotten.

Watching the NFL network is just pure insanity. The mental masterbation is unbearable, they hype the preseason and everyone loses focus on what the preseason means = NADA. Monday night, 9/10, all the guessing will come to an end, some meat and potatoes, the butterflies will be stirring....lets get it on (Mills Lane).

"I don't see the secondary downgraded at all."

Agreed. However, arguably it was downgraded because Al Davis covetted his CBs... and first we lost Nnamdi, then we lost Routt, who Davis ultimately chose over Asomugha for $$ reasons that I still can't figure out.

I have long been in favor of bringing in more "pedestrian" CBs and playing zone....

Blogger nyraider said...

"When I posted letting Routt walk was a mistake you thought he was expendable and later that the replacements coming off injury were upgrades!!!"

I've not changed that opinion... which included a new defensive scheme.

And you complained that signing Spencer and Bartell were bad moves because of their injuries last year.

Do Spencer and Bartell show any lingering effects from injury? McKenzie demonstrated incredible insight in signing these guys at tremendous value (sign of a great GM).

IMO, if only one of these guys steps up and becomes a solid CB for us, McKenzie is a genius.

Anonymous JONES said...

Unless Nnamdi has a good year, he can't be considered a proven top CB. They never threw his way, the other side was always much easier to pick apart. IMO, if he struggles this year, no way he should have been paid the money he was by both the Raiders and Eagles.

Routt, just because he got big money, doesn't mean he was a big time player, so if you put Bartell's work in the NFL vs Nnamdi...I would take Spencer over Routt, especially for this Defense. Mr.Davis paid big money and got little returns. How many times did we see that scenario? And you could still say it about Seymour.

At this point, Reggie is working on less money and bigger returns.

I just want to see the Raiders return to being a dominate force in the NFL. From the Day Mark Davis hired Reggie McKenzie, I felt this team will come back and be a force again. Am I 100% convinced, no, but I sure see improvement from the top down and that's all we can ask for. Get behind it and bring home the wins. The old way was tired and worn, couldn't endorse it, it had to change, but the Raiders will always be Al's team.

Turns out I was right that the Raiders should watch the Seahawks waiver wire after the shellacking Thurs night.

Raiders acquired DB Phillip Adams from Seattle.

In a more curious move, Raiders released cornerback Chimdi Chekwa to sign Adams.

Chekwa was a fourth-round pick in 2011. This is a move that Al Davis would never make. Fast DBs used to be scholarship players through at least their initial contract.

Absolutely. Seymour needs to really step up his game this year to bring value to the trade AL made to get him.

IMO, Raiders have the talent and depth on their roster to replace Seymour.

Curious why we would release Bryan McCann, who was the only healthy Raider who can field a punt.

Rock Cartwright was released by SF. He was a standout special teamer for the Raiders...

Not one good thing to say from the supposed "real Raider fan", just bitch and whine like someone who smells a stinky panty. Are you a fan? Or are you just a poser who wants to antagonize Raider boards?

PR,

No walls are moving. I certaintly didn't know everything in Jan/Feb but I was confident in McKenzie and Allen and about many aspects of our roster. I also knew that Den, SD, and OAK all finished 8-8in 2011 and we had the 3rd place schedule.

As the off-season progressed and I witnessed McKenzie and DA in action, my belief was only further bolstered.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you recently predict the Raiders going 10-6?

10-6 as always…That’s the minimum to be AFCW Champs or win a “Wild Card”….Allot of hope in that one!!!
------------------------------------
NO way you can stretch that into any more than what it is...I'm ALWAYS at least 10-n-6 to start every single season....No change in that now but as noted with allot of "Hope" NOT confidence!!!...And after I posted they showed me something one week those new found hopes were dash to pieces by what they showed me this week!!!

No Doubt that "Clown Car" was warming up in the garage this week...Right??...It's just a matter of time til it comes out with a shiny new paint job posing as "The New Era" while that "Trail-o-Tears" is reestablished in the "Valley-o-Doom-n-Gloom"!!!...I can sense it already and the season hasn't even started yet!!...As Always Fear drives that car!!!

I will be the one that's unshaken....Knowing full well that a slow start is just to be expected and if by chance we win than YaHoo!!!....An added plus!!!

NFL Odds...

"SD" by 1-1.5 over Raiders at home which translates to a 4-4.5 point advantage considering the 3 points given to home teams...

That when "SD" is starting a rookie UDFA at "OT" in place of the injured Jarred...Has their "RB" out...Notoriously slow starters under Turner and without their past "WR" threats and an old "TE" on his last leg...And still favored against our Raiders at home???

That show what the rest of the NFL thinks of our preseason follies -n- coaching/roster moves so far!!!

Update in three posts:

I haven’t been back in a while because I kind of got tired of the general lack of respect for varying opinions. I pretty much hold the same opinions as I did the last time I posted. For my opinions, I was pretty much labeled “unsupportive” of the new regime and overly negative about their prospects. I still believe the Raiders will finish with six or seven wins – eight on the outside.

Background for this belief:

1. The death of Al Davis is NOT addition by subtraction! As I never gave Al Davis ALL of the credit for the team’s success over the years, I refuse to assign him ALL of the blame for the last 10 years.

2. Some players and coaches have attempted to use the falsity that Al Davis “ran the defense” as an excuse for their own failures, but that doesn’t make it true. To Hue Jackson, I’d remind him that the 2011 defense was better before Al Davis died. To Michael Huff, who claims that he’s thrilled with having a wider range of assignments, I’d remind him that you have to perfect “simple” before you can perfect complex. He had to be in fewer places in 2011, but he often wasn’t there.

3. The Raiders have severely lacked talent on both offense and defense since 2003 (at virtually every position). That issue was not addressed by an understanding that a complete rebuild would be required until after the 2006 season. Davis devised his own plan for that rebuild, and it was well underway until he died last year. His plan was only about half complete. As McKenzie is his own man, he must devise his own plan and virtually start over again in order to carry out his OWN vision.

4. The team severely lacks depth. While you can argue that all 32 teams suffer injuries, you can’t argue that all 32 two teams lack any depth. Injuries hurt the Raiders more than the other 32 teams, because it exposes our lack of depth. See post #2 for further details.

5. I have every confidence in McKenzie and believe it will take him about three or four years for his plans to start taking real shape. I have no real predictions regarding Allen, as he’s never been an HC before. I will say that I am VERY impressed with his selection of our DC (Tarver).

There is no such thing as a preseason statistic, except injuries. I hope Palmer is just playing it cool, as I would rather have him fool the foes into thinking he's an inaccurate veteran than them having fresh film of him at his best. That's how pirates win. I think we are far better than we have seen. Bet we start 3-1, beating the Bolts to a bitter pulp. The donkeys will be awful, KC is sharper that the two, but i firmly believe that if we get some surprising performances @ WR, and McFadden stays consistent, we can laugh our way into the playoffs. With hard work and discipline, Oak will sail the black ship into the playoffs and steal the posers' GOLD. GO OAK. It's right there... Break out the cannon balls!

For the Raiders to even be a .500 team this year, they need continued good health from DMC, Ford, Moore and their interior line. While Criner and Streater are showing promise – THEY ARE ROOKIES WITHOUT A SINGLE CATCH AS A PRO. McFadden has NEVER played more than SEVEN games in a season and this is his FIFTH year. I have NO faith that he will remain healthy this year. Both Moore and Ford have been hurt more than they have been healthy during their time here as well. Now both have already missed the majority of camp and the preseason.

QB: We are better set at QB than at any time since 2002. Palmer is a first rate QB, but he has the problem of showing too much faith in his receivers in expecting them to fight for the ball. Our receiving corps is too young to have much NFL experience in that. Palmer has shown an inability to back off of that confidence, and to be more cautious. Expect some interceptions with Palmer. Leinart and Pryor are better QB depth than I can remember in more than a couple of decades.

RB: If McFadden shows his usual tendency to play less than half a season, we are in serious trouble. I didn’t like Bush’s performance last year, and now there is a far bigger drop off between our #1 and #2 HB. I like Reese at FB, but he tends to be somewhat injury prone as well.

WR: I think we have among the best starting 3 in the league – WHEN THEY PLAY. You’re putting way too much pressure on Criner and Streater if they don’t.
OL: We have SIX good offensive linemen. One very good Tackle, two decent tackles, one good Center, and two slightly better than fair Guards. After that, the drop off is severe.

TE: We don’t have an NFL quality starting TE. It looked like it was going to be Ausberry, but for some reason his development has been arrested. Essentially we DO have depth at TE; we just don’t have a starter.

DL: I think we are at least as solid here as we are with our QB.

LB: We don’t have THREE good LBs for a 4-3 defense, let alone depth. We have Wheeler. We have McClain against the run, but he still hasn’t shown he can cover. If he does prison time, or gets suspended, we’re dead. Curry does us NO GOOD when he’s injured already. The rest (with the exception of Buris) might not even be in the NFL after this season.

S: We are probably as solid here as we are at QB and DL. For my money, I’d move Huff to corner; move Branch to FS; and move Mitchell to SS.

CB: This is another huge problem area. We have two Corners who have been injured for most of the last two seasons and an extreme drop off after that. I’m not even sure we can put a decent Nickel on the field unless it’s one of the Safeties (in fact it will likely be Huff when we use a Nickel package).

Special teams didn’t show very much in the preseason. We won’t know until the season starts.

Part #3.

The division will likely shake out as follows:

Denver will win the division. They made the playoffs last season with Tebow. While they’ve lost their DC, their HC is a defensive specialist. If Payton Manning stays healthy, I expect he’s good for two more wins than Tebow. Denver will likely win 10 games, and possibly 11 games. That will win the division rather easily.

KC has been on a similar path as the Raiders. However, their development has not been interrupted by the death of their owner, nor a complete regime change. They will stay on course enough to add a win to their schedule, and they will likely find 9 victories.

Raiders: Since we have NO depth at most positions, no real starters in a few positions, and stability in only about three positions, our chronic injury problems will lead us to six or seven wins, with an outside chance at eight wins.

As for SD, Turner has reached his predictable wall. Turner can only coach with a well-established team in front of him. He is not really very good at personnel maintenance. He is not really very good at development. I think Turner has reached the end of his rope, and will also only find about six or seven wins. However, I believe that the Raiders will edge them out on tie breakers.

No further comments unless there are dramatic developments (which there haven’t been so far).

I respect ya Blanda, but disagree. It was not a lack of talent, but a lack od discipline and heart, and a loss of Mr. Davis' skills that once made the team great. He should have passed the torch and just sat back. Plenty of talent, just bad front office decisions, especially with coaching moves, and QB decisions. I feel better about our direction, and smell Gold. Within a few years... bigtime brother. Great reasonings though... I appreciate your basis.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result," Allen said. "So we've got to do something different. I know Agent Orange is usually the cut and paste guy...this from JMac, had to post it....

....The atmosphere in the post-Davis era is one that leaves nothing to chance. Rather than tread water and wait until the owner makes a decision on a matter of personnel or scheme, the Raiders are learning to operate with a sense of order.

"It's different. Everything is detailed," Kelly said. "Everything's got a plan. It ain't, 'Wait a minute and we'll find out.' You know everything, and you know what you've got to do, down to the second."

With Allen having been given complete control of the on-field operation, there are no gray areas. In past years, Raiders coaches have been accustomed to being overruled, which could undercut authority.

When the Raiders arrived at training camp on July 28, they were required to sign in for all meals. Punctuality became a demand, rather than a loose concept. Players were challenged mentally as well as physically in meetings and film sessions.

In terms of style, Allen coaches in the manner of Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, overseeing and believing in a specific process in how to go about business on a daily basis.

"You know where you need to be at every moment, every day," safety Michael Huff said. "It's all lined up, what everybody expects from you, and if you stray from that, you really can't argue about it because it's been set up since Day 1."

Said quarterback Carson Palmer: "Coach is a stickler. He's been all over us, he's a fundamental guy. He wants us to understand every facet of the game and every possible situation you could be in a game. We a cover a lot on the field, we cover a lot in meetings and he's been on top of us so far."

Allen overhauled the Raiders systems of offense and defense. He brought in Greg Knapp to implement a West Coast style system with bootlegs, rollouts and a pure zone running scheme.

In conjunction with defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, Allen installed a multiple defense with mixtures in alignments and coverages which are radically different than the natural rush, man-to-man systems favored by Davis.

In contrast to the bombastic approach of 2011 head coach Hue Jackson, Allen's demeanor is simple and direct, in part because he doesn't have to sell anyone on the notion he is in charge.

There were no grand proclamations of making the playoffs or the Super Bowl. Allen, the 10th head coach since the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1995, reportedly got a four-year contract, lending a sense of stability.

Oakland was 1-3 in the preseason and Allen has stressed on a daily basis the team is far from a finished product.

"I think we're a tough team and we do have tough-minded people," Allen said. "We've played smart in situations and executed some situational football really well. I do think some of that discipline is showing up. It's still not the final product we're looking for."

The promise, according to Allen, is daily improvement and a constant education on what it will take to be a Raider in the new era.

"This is a complex game, and we throw a lot of things at them," Allen said. "What we're looking for is every day you want to see them improve a little bit. We don't want what we call repeat-mistake offenders. We don't want to see guys that make the same mistake over and over.

"I'm never going to be satisfied with where we're at. We're always going to be looking to improve, so it's an ongoing process."

Very concise and to the point, Oak Town.

Blanda - Why do you think there was a plan in place? Coaching changes clearly suggest there wasn't.

Actually, you make it sound like players and coaches had an agenda for blaming Al Davis. That’s an excuse in itself and, frankly, misguided.

Mark Davis, McKenzie and Allen had nothing to gain by letting us know the organization was outmoded.

The Raiders problems grew far deeper than the roster, or the coaching for that matter.

12:47 PM
Blogger Calico Jack said...

I believe McKenzie and Allen's plans have already taken a well defined shape and promising outlook.

A sense of stability within the organization has been established.

When was the last time you could honestly say that there was an excellent chance that our Head Coach will be with us for the next 4 years?

When was the last time that you truly felt the Head Coach was completely in charge of ALL on field operations?

I agree about the lack of quality backups in a few positional units (RB, LB, TE). McKenzie inherited a team with severe cap issues and no draft picks in the 1st 3 rounds.

I am optimistic about 2012 and supremely bullish on 2013 when we can be more active in free agency plus have a full complement of draft picks excluding our 2nd round pick.

1:21 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Reggie is dismantling AL's speedy secondary:

Van Dyke, was a third-round pick in 2011, and the fastest man at last year’s Scouting Combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds.

Chimdi Chekwa, a fourth-round pick in 2011, ran the 40 in 4.33 seconds at the Combine.

Under previous management, both these guys would have stuck to the roster like glue for many years. Meanwhile, we'd be drafting more DBs who post the lowest 40-times at the Combine.

Now is when football acumen trumps speed.... and that's minty fresh.
