A win is a win? Meh. Unfortunately, Raiders do not look like a good team fighting to find its way. Graham is doing more than McDaniels to make the best of what he has. So many weapons on offense that aren't being used. Mayer! Renfrow!! Adams!!!
Another Jimmy G injury. Have to say, Hoyer's passes looked noticeably more forceful than Garoppolo passes, and the long pass to Tucker was probably out of Garoppolo's arm range. Too bad Hoyer can't find the end zone. Raiders were 1-6 in the red zone. Honestly, McDaniels called another crappy game.
The defense was decent for second straight week, but they also gave up long drives, including one that lasted what felt like most of the second half.
In the end, Raiders are at best a mediocre team going through a soft spot in their schedule. Bears next week, then they hit a buzzsaw with a Lions team that's won 4 in a row.
Not sure it gets any better than this. So, enjoy it!
NY, what's with you you got the Sunday night Blues even after a Raiders win. I think it can get better than this if the offense starts playing up to its potential. Though like you I'm skeptical of that as long as McDaniel's coach and garoppolo's quarterback. I'm going to enjoy three and three for the moment. Sandy
Sure, I appreciate a win. But looking at a six-game sample, the Raiders offense is not as advertised, despite all the weapons and despite McDaniels having two of his so-called system QBs on the roster. Devante Adams has suddenly disappeared, and Renfrow is a ghost. And Raiders fans are now realizing Garoppolo has a noodle arm and is injury prone (which SF fans already knew).
Surprisingly, Patrick Graham is making adjustments that have improved the defense. It only took a season and a half (although, Pats had a totally anemic offense coming into the game).
But it's incredibly disappointing how bad Josh McDaniels is at calling the offense. If not for the safety, the Raiders would not have the broken 20 points for the sixth straight game. IMO, the only way to revive the running game is to find success somewhere else, but teams continue to stack the box and we keep seeing the same plays over and over.
We should expect better.
More broadly, I setup my opinion in the last thread. We shouldn't get a false sense of security during what is clearly a soft spot in the schedule. Jordan Love was horrible last week, Mac Jones was not much better this week, and Justin Fields may be injured next week on an already reeling Bears team. But that's certainly no gimme.
Unless the Raiders offense actually wakes up, these games only serve to knock them down further in the draft order... and to your disappointment, Sandy, breathes life into McDaniels tenure.
The play that caused Garoppolo to leave the game didn't look that severe. Could it be that he just aggravated an existing condition? Garoppolo has missed 1.5 out of 6 games, and counting.
Sandy, to your prediction, Tyree Wilson is absentee. He's about as easy to find in on a play as Hunter Renfrow.
I hope they trade Renfrow before the deadline, for Renfrow's sake. He deserves better, and the Raiders could get a mid-round pick. It's best for everyone. Strangely, the Raiders are deep at WR, they just can't get everyone the ball.
Wilson is the lowest graded player at his position in the entire league. He shouldn't even be on the field. If he's still this bad in a couple of years, we can change his name to Jerry Tillery.
IMO, the deadly car accident involving Carter was personal for the Raiders. Carter was never going to be a Raider. Truly a shame!
Regarding next year's draft, if the Raiders win enough games they might again be on the outside looking in at players like Stroud and Carter... and probably end up with another Wilson.
At this point, with all their failures, we can still enjoy watching Crosby, who is clearly on a mission. I believe Raiders are at a rare point in their history where they have strong leaders like Crosby, Adams, Jacobs, and others who truly want to win and give 110%. It's not the paycheck culture that we suffered thru for so many years.
Nate Frank Clark is visiting the Chiefs, so it appears the Broncos are willing to trade Clark inside the division. Like I said, everything has a price.
I think he is washed up and some baggage. I wonder what it would cost to get Danielle Hunter from the Vikings given he is a FA next year. Him and Crosby rushing from each end would be deadly. Other options available at DE are CArl Lawson and Chase Young. Any of the above three would be worth a day two pick and or Renfrow.
I’ve been following the Saints/ Jags game and I have to think that if we would have kept Carr we would have lost the plot! They should been crushing the Jags but it the fashion we are too familiar with Car is only good between the 20’s and even then frustrating… we have a good opportunity with the Bears this week regardless of our QB (or theirs) we need to win this one. Aussie Raider
Ziegler needs to get a deal done for Renfrow. Maybe that will include an edge player.
I watched some of the Saints game too and it was deja vu. But at least Carr has an arm. We are getting stuffed at the LOS because Garoppolo is no threat down field. Unfortunately for Carr, he put a ball right in Foster Moreau's hands in the end zone on 3rd down for the tie and Moreau dropped it.
Raiders get another chance this week to demonstrate they are a mediocre team. Let's hope they don't blow it.
Aussie Raider, Watched the Saints-Jags last night too. Chris Olave gave up running his route twice, late in the game; and 5 or 6 times in the entire game; cost a few turnovers early. Dude could be a stud WR, but he gives up, it is a continuing complaint among the Saints team and fans. Winston says it was a problem last season too. It seems like he doesn't care. A lot of missed opportunities because of it. Their offensive line seems to be struggling too, much like the Raiders right now. A lot of the offensive woes is not on Carr, but on the Saints horrible play calls, and lack of discipline by some of the players. Not too mention, they keep pulling Carr out and running Hill at QB the first 2 plays in the red zone is a sure way to kill momentum too. BTW, down 24-9 to tie it at 24 with Carr leading the way was awesome display of football, the best the Saints have played all year. Only to give up a 40 yard slant for the lead, and to have Moreau drop a wide open pass in the end zone with 30 seconds left, and Olave giving up in the end zone, almost causing another pick. I guarantee, Olave will be cut after this season, and their OC will be given the boot.
IDK, Nate, Hill is a weapon in the Saints offense. He can run, pass, catch like a pro. How and when they use him is not his fault. Carr actually ran with the ball too, with some success.
But I agree with your primary observation, that the Saints have a culture problem. Ironically, and I mentioned this before, the Raiders are in a rare moment of strong leadership and determination. Their biggest problem might be coaching.
Are the Raiders going to try and make a playoff run with Hoyer? Is he suddenly heir apparent to the Raiders QB position? Hoyer hasn't won a start in a decade, and that's not for not starting.
The players (Adams!) prefer O'Connell.
Is this just another stupid decision by a coaching staff that excels in stupid decisions.
I question that Hoyer gives the Raiders the best chance to win, and we all know he's not in any long-term plan to be the Raiders QB. By extension, O'Connell should get as many starts as possible this year.
Seems to me like the Bears present an opportunity for the Raiders and O'Connell.
NY, on this one I have to disagree with you Hoyer gives them the best chance not to lose. AOC nor Hoyer is a winning quarterback at this point in their respective careers they're going with the guy who will make the least mistakes hopefully in a very winnable game to try and get to four and three and let McDaniels hold on to his job a little longer unfortunately. Stidham should have been kept over Hoyer but he has litttle upside as well. Sandy.
You mean like having a lead at halftime (in this case a winnable game before it starts) and playing conservatively for the chance to lose?
Geez, if McDaniels is just looking for excuses, nobody would fault him for playing O'Connell, but he'll get trashed by media, fans and possibly some players if Hoyer loses. Hoyer is not as accurate as O'Connell. He got lucky on one deep ball last week, and perhaps that's enough to buy some room for Jacobs to run, because clearly Garoppolo could not.
It's got potential for an ugly upset. I guess the question is, will we see O'Connell by the second half?
Has anyone looked closely at the schedule? Win or lose today, can the Raiders win more than 2-3 the rest of the year? Next, the Lions are a top tier team right now. After the Lions, the Giants and Jets have lethal defenses. Then the Dolphins, who might break their own 70-pt season high against the Raiders defense. Raiders play the Chiefs twice (expect more in-your-face circle displays from them), the Chargers and perhaps a vengeful Broncos team. That just leaves the Vikings and Colts, both teams crawling out of their own messes.
Sadly, today ends the soft spot in the Raiders schedule, and presents a must win if they expect a chance to match last year's 6-11 record.
I disagree they win this game they are 4-3, the Raiders are at least even with Giants and Jets so those games are winnable as well. That would be 6 wins. Vikings, Colts and Broncos are bad to awful that is 9. I give them a chance against the Chargers that would be 10 and a playoff spot. I would rather finish wiht a winning record than tank. Losing sucks. That is why I am okay with Hoyer playing today he gives the Raiders a chnce not to lose, AOC is way too raw, he had no spatial awarness hence all the sacks. They need a QB today who will not to turn it over. They should also trade for Danielle Hunter which would make the 10 win scenario very realistic.

favorite quotes:
Baker Mayfield: "I sucked today."
Joe Borrow: "I never apologize for a win."
Both standup players.
NYR...I have to agree with you. Do not have the sense that these struggle to beat bad teams, is evidence of some kind of turn around.
This is not like the Lions turn around of last season at all.
These games are tough to watch. A win is a win no matter how ugly, ok, but lets see Raiders play this bad a beat a good team. Not likely.
Best quote of the week:
Josh McDaniels: "That was certainly no Picasso."
And Garappolo's streak continues, cannot play a season without injury. Bring in O'Connell...
The play that caused Garoppolo to leave the game didn't look that severe. Could it be that he just aggravated an existing condition? Garoppolo has missed 1.5 out of 6 games, and counting.
Every injury is pre-existing with him. Dude cannot stay healthy.

Here is a question for you NY. If they did the draft over today would Wilson even go in the first round? I metcha CArter would go number 2 to Stroud

NY, Frank Clark was cut a week ago, no trade. Garapollo is out for Sunday, hopefully they start AOC. Sandy
Ok, I wasn't aware of the circumstances. For a team so desperate for a pass rush, Clark should be a Raider!
I think he is washed up and some baggage. I wonder what it would cost to get Danielle Hunter from the Vikings given he is a FA next year. Him and Crosby rushing from each end would be deadly.
